My ideal 2023-24 roster

Created by: Ihopeigetit
Team: 2023-24 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 2, 2022
Published: Aug. 2, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know Veleno isn't in our plan considering how many Cs we have in the system, but I would love to have him.

Love Asplund and Olo, but I feel we cant afford either long-term considering who else we need to re-sign - and Barbashev + Veleno > Asplund + Olo in my OP

  2. 2023 3rd round pick (DET)

Pick compensates for salary retention; hope by next year Olo is worth a 1st at his production and a 2.75mil cap hit (should prove himself this year)
DET
  1. Olofsson, Victor ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Detroit has a bad PP - I predict this continues. This trade comes at 2023 draft or TDL. He replaces Bertuzzi - much cheaper option in terms of $$$

Detroit declines. Don't care for Olofsson's game. Rather keep Veleno and the pick.

Agreed right now. This is in 1 year and depends on Olo proving he can produce outside of the PP but still be a PP guy. Any trade b/w buff that you can see rn, if you dont like olo?

I doubt he figures out how to play defense in the next year, so I just don't see Olofsson being a fit in Detroit. As for roster players, I don't see a fit for any trade with Buffalo. If we're moving Veleno, it's either going to be for really good futures, or as part of a package for something bigger. Detroit already has a logjam and we can't have a 1:1 trade in roster players.

Wth is that COL trade? Since when did a dude with a career high 27pts become worth a first round pick?

Sabres wouldnt even do that, Asplund is more valuable to Buffalo than a late 1st.

That works for me I'd rather keep Veleno and the 3rd. 2 different reasons for the same outcome.

Some of my problems with this lineup as a Sabres fan:

1. Matt Savoie is more than likely in the lineup to start the 2023-24 season
2. Thompson is getting more money than that if he puts up 30+ goals again, think closer to 7 IMO
3. The contract for Cozens walks him straight to UFA I believe.. He's probably due for a 2 year bridge next off-season and then it'll either be time to move on or go term with him.
4. Okposo is getting the C and I don't see them not giving him a cheap short term deal to stick around for 2ish more years.
5. I don't think that Mitts is ever relegated to a 4th line role, if he doesn't prove to be a top-9 entity this season he's likely moved out to make space for younger players.

1. Why? I mean that would be nice, but I dont think he jumps that quick - he's not even in Roch this year, is he?
2. Okay with paying him that if he performs again, but I feel like there will be a slight decline as we offer more guys ice time so he wont have the time to put up the points
3. Cozens would be RFA - just a Tkachuk situation if he doesnt like it here; this contract is similar idea as when dahlia signed for 6mil
4. Okposo will leave to a contender next year in my OP
5. I mean I agree, I just dont think there will be any takes unless we sell low on him. Think I'd rather just keep him

1. He can’t play in Rochester this year, from the CHL I believe if you are under 20 you cannot play in the AHL. I think to start 2023 the WHL will be below him given he takes another step
2. Fair enough, I actually agree in that his numbers will go down a bit, but I don’t know if it’ll be enough to get his AAV under 6mill
3. Is it not age 27 or 7 pro seasons? His ELC would account for 3 and a 4 year deal would make 7 total so I think he’d be UFA, I could be mistaken though
4. Fair enough, I hadn’t really given that much thought. Assuming he gets the C though our window to be competitive should also be opening soon so I think he could stay
5. Definitely another good point, I just don’t know where he’ll fit because in my mind Savoie will be on the team and we’ll have Thompson, Cozens, Savoie in the top 9

Good post, very thought provoking!
