Islanders decline unless you meant to trade for Varlamov at the 2022-2023 Deadline

There is value to that package but Isles won't want to trade Sorokin

Value, sure. The kind of value to get an arguably top 5 goalie in the league. Absolutely ****ing not!

formenton has no value to me IMO until the hockey canada investigation is resolved, but even then he can't be the headlining piece in a package for a top 5 goalie in the league.

Hmm what is he worth? I have followed the NHL for a long time and goalies never had the same comparative value to players

Forsberg is only 2-3 years older so both goalies are still young, he was pretty good last year. Sure Sorokin is a much better bet to continue to be great but that's why Formenton and 2nd are added. I'm not saying that would do it but acting like it was not even close is hyperbole at best

He shouldn't be in trade proposals at all. No idea why people are putting him there

i don’t know about pure value since we haven’t seen a goalie trade for a player of his caliber in a long time but it would have to be a significantly better package than this to get the islanders to take it. at least one top prospect and a first rounder to start any conversation.

One I can think of :

Jun. 30, 2013

New Jersey Devils Acquire: Cory Schneider

Vancouver Canucks Acquire: 2013 1st round pick (NJD - #9 - Bo Horvat)

Alex Formenton IS that top prospect you're talking about. It just happened that he played 1 NHL season at 22 y/o and led the league in short handed goals (5) and added 13 ES goals.

I made a poll asking Sens fans a few months ago :

Would you have traded Alex Formenton for a late 1st round pick at the past deadline? Which asset would you rather have?

Alex Formenton (22 y/o, RFA) Votes: 118 96.7%
1st round pick in 2022 (27th OA to 32nd OA) Votes: 4 3.3%

Total voters 122 Poll closed May 5, 2022.

Forsberg + 2nd is a pretty nice add on top of him. I totally understand if you don't see this because there's absolutely no reason to trade Sorokin unless it was for a ransom. I would seriously ask the same for Mads Sogaard and he has played 2 NHL games.

So I repeat again, while it may not be "enough", thinking it's far from enough is hyperbole, at best.

every fanbase overvalues their own prospects, so i don’t put too much stock in a fan poll. like i said before, formenton does nothing for me right now in the face of the hockey canada thing, but even without that i’d much prefer a top 10 pick like schneider got or a better prospect than formenton. forsberg had a good year last year but was on waivers the year before, can he be consistent? and a second round pick again is fine but i’d prefer a first. i’d be looking for upgrades to all three pieces and to me that means it’s far from enough.

Replaced the Sorokin trade with a trade for Gibson. The Sorokin one was definitely some wishful thinking, though I agree the package wasn't miles off given that Forsberg is a very serviceable and underrated goalie and Formenton still has plenty of upside. The Gibson trade I think is fair value with Gibson being a little unpredictable and Forsberg not being miles off. Formenton (without the Hockey Canada situation) and enough to bridge the difference even with the retained salary in my mind. Whether or not Anaheim would be willing to retain salary is the questionable part but I think they'd be willing to do it for that package in return. This team 2 years down the line would definitely be a contender and would be very hard to play against.

Yeah but it's a community that I have been hanging with since 2008 and I'd say many posters are quite knowledgeable. Some even have scouting experience. We have observed Formenton's evolution for years and he's already pretty valuable. Just the fact that he has McDavid speed make him automatically very valuable.

https://www.silversevensens.com/2022/1/26/22901993/alex-formenton-has-arrived-ottawa-senators-sens-nhl

If he's guilty in the scandal he has no value and he can go to hell from all I care. e just have no idea and can only speculate. If he's not guilty then he has pretty good value. The guy led the league in short handed goals and actually think he will end up top-10 in NHL history if he is not a grade A a-hole

Anyway, if I had Sorokin no way I'd be trading him

For Forsberg we never know with goalies that I don't have a long track record but I don't know, he didn't look like a flash in the pan to me. Note that I called a lot of goalies like that (I have been a goalie for 30+ years) in the past, including Andre Hammond when he was 20-1-2 and 0.941 SV% and Mike Condon when he relieved Craig Anderson.
