Right to UFA in two years.. Seems like they could have kept his rights longer. This is not a bridge deal it's a good luck somewhere else deal.
I may be wrong, but I feel I see a lot of CGY fans crapping on him, usually because the belief is this past season was an outlier compared to his usual production.
I think this is a great signing. If he hits? You have a bargain bin high-end D for two years on a team that is in a "win-now" window, with first rights to negotiate an extension. If he doesn't? It's two years and a relatively low cap hit that you can take or move pretty easily.
When he played with Tanev, Kylington looked great. Got a bit exposed in the playoffs when Tanev got hurt but then again the entire Flames defense was. Weegar should help with that but I wonder if there is a trade coming as Calgary has to many Dman and could use a bottom 6 forward
But getting back to Kylington I like the deal and lets see if this was not a one off season
This is a great move for Calgary, now they can give Mangiapane $5.5 million and Ruzicka a little over $1 million if they want to.
No Lucic or Monahan buyouts or dumps.
This gets them thru the next 2 years of little cap increases and past the point of extensions on the big guys.
Well it's very cheap for what he brings but, this sends him straight to UFA. Good contract now, bad contract when he leaves
Notwithstanding Weegar and Huberdeau, most of their returning core is signed for exactly two more years. I wonder if their strategy is to get as many players as they can on that timeline, so that if none of them want to sign extensions they’ll be in a good position to blow it up and start a rebuild.
That being said, I suspect this is more about being afraid to give him more than two years in case last season turns out to be an outlier, though at $2.5M AAV I don’t think there’d be a huge risk even if they gave him a third year.

"Give him a 3rd year" is not what it seems. The player usually commands a higher price once a team eats into his UFA years. So it would probably be $3.5 million x 3 years or $4.5 million for 4 years.
2 years at $2.5 mil is all Calgary could afford right now. Once they move off some cap space then they can extend him.

I think your third and fourth year numbers are high -- the difference between 3x$3.5M and 2x$2.5M is $5.5M in the third year -- but I agree that I wouldn't give him a third year if it meant a higher AAV. I meant if they could get a third year at the same AAV, I'd still be ok with that. But I have no problem with 2x$2.5M. I think it's a good signing.

Well this was his first good year. His coming out party, if you will. He put up solid numbers and got some legit TOI. Everyone on that team had crazy high +/- this season but I mean he was second on the team among D. I agree with you, but this, to me, is the type of player you want to keep; a promising young D you drafted. I'd of wanted to sign him longer. But I don't know the player that well, or what CGY is really trying to do. Maybe they want him to prove it more. Thing is if he does prove it, and they shorted him here, they have no leverage and he will bounce with no return.

I agree with those fans. His ppg last season was double what it was the previous seasons, so this could be a fluke. That said, even if he regresses, it won't be one of the worst signing for a D-man in recent years.
