You want to give up essentially 3 first round picks for a a 30 year old who is often hurt and never cracked 80 points?
..... why

I wasn’t sure if 1 1st was enough but if so I’d change it to that.

1) He hasn’t played with any elite wingers.
2) he’s elite defensively
3) over his last 5 years, he’s posted 72pts/82 games average

Is it really massive for a 2 way 1C ? Under 8 mill

Often? Lol he had Covid once and got hurt… he’s a pretty healthy guy and arguably the best 2-way player in the world if bergy retires

No. Calgary fans are just insanely cheap on this website. Many still think Monahan carries value.

I think the issue here is more the lack of protection on the picks... lets say Huberdeau walks... Calgary is barely a playoff team then.

Zary, a 1st and a cap dump don't come close to getting a defensively elite center, but 2 1sts makes it worthwhile. Just protect them in some way.

The 2025 1st belongs to Florida . The 2023 1st is when Huberdeau and Weegar are still here

You think it’s a bad contract?

He started the season badly, then missed over half of it with a major injury. He’s locked up to a top line number for the next 8 years, and he’s turning 30 two months into the season, so there’s only room for decline, and he was never an elite scorer. So yeah, I do think it’s a bad contract. It would likely have been fair for the first 3 years if he hadn’t sustained a major injury, and only got bad after that, but right now we don’t know if he’ll even return to form. It sounds a lot like the excuses I was making about Monahan a year ago “oh yeah he’ll bounce back for sure and remain a top 6 centre” and they’ve scored at pretty comparable rates, only Couturier is several years older, making more money, and for MUCH longer. The risk there is insane. If we’re giving up two 1sts and a prospect recently drafted in the 1st, I want a guy locked up for his prime, preferably below market value, not a guy being paid for what he’s already done as he declines. It’s a much better use of assets to not give up the futures and ride out the last year of Monahan’s deal, freeing up 6.35mil cap space to either resign Huberdeau and Weegar or go big game hunting in free agency next year.

I Couturier a lot. He contract is great value for a bunch of years. But not sure he ie Eichel-level value. It's 3 firsts and former 1st (technically) in Monahan. This trade could end up being lopsided if Monahan regained any of his previous abilities after his hip issues. Philly would say no to less than 3 firsts (they have no reason to deal him). Put this down as imaginative and creative but unlikely?

I guess I can see where you’re coming from

All the flyers started the year horribly under AV, JVR had 2 goals in the first twenty-two games and finished the year with twenty-four goals. So I’m hoping this is something that fixes itself when he returns

Believe me man, been there lol. Monahan scored 20+ goals per year for 7 straight years, starting fresh out of his draft. Then injuries made him suck. There’s only a faint glimmer of bounce back hope for him at this point, because he’s only 27, but it’s hard to believe in it much anymore

Probably about right.

Couterier with the long contract and age is scary, but 2 likely later round 1sts and a cap dump for a selke center who gets 70+ pts is not a great return for PHI.

I think if you take away one of the firsts, its way too imbalanced the opposite way based on how you see Monahan. Maybe Valikmaki (PHI doesn;t really need LD) and Dube and a 1st works better, but Monahan is seen as pure negative at this point, even as a expiring UFA.

I’m not sure Philly would accept that trade him since he is likely going to be the next captain
