Was this a good signing?

6 million for a guy with 1 50 point season? Get out of here!

Yeah who does he think he is? Zach Hyman? Getting 7 years of 5.5 million with zero 50 point seasons?

Kempe and Mangiapane have had nearly identical career trajectories so far. Both had impressive breakout seasons after a few seasons of meh.

Kempe got 4 years @ $5.5M. Mangiapane gets 3 years @ 5.8M. Kempe's contract is "good." This one is less good. I voted no.

Mangiapane gave up aav for short term to become a Ufa in his 20s

If 8 years at a higher AAV were on the table why would he walk away? He's highly unlikely to score 35G again.

I doubt it was 8. But probably 5 or so. This way he bets on himself and can get another 6ish year contract in a bigger cap environment in his 20s

I’d call this one “fair”, as opposed to “good”. I don’t think it’s a bargain, but I wouldn’t say it’s an overpay either. Some people have used the “one good season” argument, and I’m usually critical of teams that sign players who’ve had only one good season to big contracts, but this is 3 years, not 5 or 7, and the AAV is low for a consistent 30-goal scorer if that’s what he turns out to be. I thought he was a good player even before he scored 35 goals, so I think he has the ability to continue to perform up to expectations. This contract seems to strike a good balance between regression risk and potential up-side, and age-wise it should cover most of his prime years.

Lmao you really believe this? Kempe doesn't drive offense and he's a sinkhole defensively. Mangiapane is a driver of good results on both sides of the puck.

A sink hole defensively? Lol ok bud. I would say watch some more games, but no one wants to stay up an extra 2-3 hours to watch Kings games...

Statistically Kempe was pretty bad defensively last season: +0.27 xGA/60 RelTM, +0.44 GA/60 RelTM, 4th percentile in EV Defensive WAR/60 among forwards with 200+ mins. Offensively hes good but he hasnt been good defensively for a couple years now

Mangiapane has had elite defensive numbers his entire career

They had similar stat lines but if you look a little bit deeper theres no comparison

Mangiapane is one of the better players in the league. Not looking forward to a twice as expensive and half as good Huberdeau getting credit for all the good he will do Calgary over the next 3 years

If he's able to watch flames games (as it's a mangiapane thread) then he can watch Kings games
