They dont look disciplined and thats a real concern to me as man being only up 2 goals and Latvia having so many chances to score another is not good

I mean Latvia is just diving around and the refs are falling for it. It wouldn't be a problem if we were skating and actually trying out there. It looks like we're playing a scrimmage game and Latvia is playing like they want to win. That's the difference

I know Canada won but I am extremely disappointed in their performance. Latvia had should have no business being within 3 goals of Canada. Pretty shameful given the offensive talent in Canada

I missed a good amount of the US game. Who really stood out?

It was an all around strong performances. Hughes, Bordeleau, Knies, and Coronato are definitely impressive. That game was influenced by a bad rule that gave the US a 5 minute power play and effectively destroyed an already outmatched German team

It was rather lazy, a lot of going through the motions out there. Even players who were impressive like Greig and Johnson took stupid penalties. They need to work on Bedard’s line. I’d like to see Dufour up there instead of Roy

I saw that German kid get tossed. That’s just awful. As a former defenceman and being around 6’2 myself I can tell you that when a smaller forward is going into the corner and you see a chance to play the body and cut him off you take it. It just so happened the USA player started losing his edge and was going down when the German was checking. All around a very poor decision to throw the German out

As far as Canada goes I have similar observations to some others but I’ll add who stood out positively and negatively:

Positives:

Bedard is a special talent. In fact he’s been so good that our PP seems to rely too heavily on setting him up over the right circle. When we finally started getting traffic in front of the net those shots from the point went in.

Zellweger is by far our best defenceman. He just looks so composed on or off the puck. If he’s in his own end he looks to make his read and get a loose and just smoothly break out of his end or start a quick outlet pass. He’s the real deal.

Cormier- Overall a positive, especially when he has the puck. He’s very dangerous from the point and looks like he will be running PPs for years to come. I’m still a bit nervous about him in his own end though.

Thompson- I give him a positive because we only brought one right handed shot on defence and that’s put a lot on his plate as far as being an option on the PP and on the PK. I think he held up well.

Other forwards not named Bedard who stood out:

Kidney- The kid barely saw the ice but when he did he was absolutely flying. He was hitting and looked possessed on his limited shifts. He needs to be up the lineup next time out.

Greig- He may have ended up in the box twice but that one handed goal and that skating are something else. He needs to be out there more.

Johnson- It’s not just the sexy stick work they show that has me really liking this kid, it’s his compete level without the puck. He always wants the puck and he back checks with vigor. I like him a lot.

Stankoven- He may not have lit up the net but he sure seems eager to get to the front of the net. I think we looked far too passive in front of their net but he was an exception. His support play with the puck was also very impressive. He knew when to make an outlet pass and when to slow it down. I liked his composure.

Dufour- Big and fast kid! His compete and drive play are something else. Get him up the lineup!

Disappointment:

Here are my players who just looked like they were off or not all that interested:

Defence:

Seeley looks like he doesn’t belong out there to me. He wasn’t the worst defenceman but he also wasn’t doing us any favours.

Sebrango- A slightly improved version of Seeley. He was ok enough on those PKs but other than that not impactful 5 on 5

Lambos- He was just lost out there tonight. I know he’s better than that but tonight he was a hindering us

O’Rourke- Another non factor player

Forwards:

McTavish- Ok he had multiple points so why is he not in the other category? As captain of this team I know he’s a much better player than we saw out there. Prior to the 3rd goal where he screened their goalie nicely he was just way too passive and was not using his size out there. It wasn’t a bad performance but he is one of our best players and we need way more out of him.

Roy- ok where should this kid play? Because the Bedard line isn’t it! I’d like to see Dufour or even Stankoven up there as a right handed shot on that line. Roy wasn’t a liability but he contributed little to nothing to that line.

Forester- What a disappointing player. He should be one of the top candidates to not dress. It’s sad to say but I don’t see an impactful NHL player.

Ostspchuk- I’m all for having bigger forwards out there in this era of smaller forwards but you have to be able to play too. This kid is not a great skater and to compensate he has to bring other things to the table. I don’t see those other things.

Cuylle- Another big man that we need more from. I’ve seen this kid and he can play but he was largely missing tonight.

Desnoyers- He can skate and that’s always good. He looked decent on the PK. Maybe it’s a bit harsh to have him here but he’s limited.

Lastly was Cossa… that 2nd goal must be stopped and coming out of your net and nearly blowing it by delaying… a bad night for him

I haven’t seen the game yet, but this seems like solid analysis. I specifically remember Sebrango being a complete non-factor when he wasn’t actively being a hindrance last time out. And I really don’t think Foerster shoulda been on this team at all, let alone in the top 6. On Ostapchuk, I will say from what I’ve read about him he seems like he’s the kind of player that either has a big game or an invisible game. Like he had more 3+ point games than 0 point games in the WHL playoffs lol, so he can turn it up when it matters, but he seems like it’s very much either his night or not, not much in between. I’d expect him to at least try to be useful on the forecheck (because of his size)/special teams on off nights still though. And while I love Cossa, I’ve never thought he looked solid for team Canada yet unfortunately. I want him to seize the starter’s job, but I have a feeling Garand is gonna take over, and Cossa was just thrown this easy game.

Btw, who was killing penalties for us? For a team that decided not to bring Clarke, we sure have a lot of PP specialists (Zellweger, Cormier, Seeley). Were the other 4 the PKers? I expect Lambos, O’Rourke, and Thompson were 3 of the D, but I’m curious who the 4th was, and who the forwards were.

I missed most of the Canada-Latvia game, but it seemed like an underwhelming performance from the Canadians despite the win-a team on the level of Canada's should be beating Latvia by a LOT more than only 3 goals. Bedard can't do it all on his own (even though at times it sure looked like it), and bad penalties were being taken by Canada left and right. If you're rooting for Canada, you've got to be feeling a little concerned about how they looked today.

Feels like the story of the tournament so far doesn’t it? Canada shoulda won by more than 3. USA shoulda won by more than 4, especially because Munzenberger was injured and Bugl wasn’t in net. Sweden shoulda won by way more than 1 against a Swiss team with only 2 drafted players and nobody else even on the radar. Finland is the only team even kind of living up to expectations so far.

I feel like the USA game was different in the sense that they DID thoroughly outplay Germany (the shots were 50-11 USA!) in every facet of the game, and it could've been a lot more than 5-1 if not for the German goalie Quapp. The Canada and Sweden games were just good teams who underperformed against inferior opponents.

That’s still Germany’s backup goalie lol. There’s a reason Bugl will play all the big games, and they saved him for the winnable game today (which he won). Germany without Munzenberger (their best D by a mile) and Bugl might be the worst team in the tournament. With them they’re still only 8th at best. There’s honestly no reason for Canada and the USA to not be scoring 8 at a minimum against the 3 worst teams in the tournament. Canada’s only excuse is our 2 best D and 7 of our 10 best forwards sat out, which is a far larger impact than any other nation. It still doesn’t excuse the poor roster construction though (like for real, I don’t know why Zellweger, Cormier, and Seeley are on the same team, or why Sebrango is there at all, or why Lambos is there if he’s gonna suck on the international level, and I’m not sure how I don’t know who Ethan Del Mastro is considering how deep I dive into every team’s prospects, but I’ve maybe heard his name twice in my life prior to three days ago and could name several D I’d prefer to have here over him).

There's no way you just said Zellweger is our best defender. The amount of times he fumbled the puck in the offensive zone that led to odd man rushes or the amount of giveaways in the defensive zones by lack of positional awareness and/or composure was scary. He's going to get eaten alive when it comes to more talented teams.

He was by far our best defenceman. Did you get his sweater mixed up with someone else? He was better with the puck than anyone else. He and Cormier were the only bet positives on the blueline, although I’m sympathetic to Thompson. Seely, O’Rourke especially Lambos had poor games

Edit: Ok my old man eyes failed me a couple times! I thought that first PP of theirs where they had he breakaway chance was Seeley who fumbled it but it was indeed Zellweger! I stand corrected

You know, I've always thought of Mysak of being on the outside look of ever cracking the lineup in MTL, but after a great year in Hamilton, and many great games in past WJC games, including the most recent one, I think he can become an amazing 3C, similar to Dvorak
Extremely impressed

Yeah, Mysak is really good. His brother Lic is draft eligible next year too (a D). Maybe Montreal can grab the pair of them
