Not a Huge Fix

Created by: PhilTheThrill
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 2, 2022
Published: Aug. 3, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I truly think the easiest way to get under cap and improve the bottom six is to trade McGinn. It really makes no sense to offload D when we are unsure whether Joseph and Smith are able to fill top 4/6 minutes regularly. In this case, trading McGinn as a cap dump, and bringing in Milano, Dahlen, and Sprong, makes the bottom 6 better and brings more competition to the bottom 6 for when camp starts. That, and should Kapanen not pan out, we have options.

Teams that are willing to eat cap space aren’t going to ask for much in return especially for a player earning $2.75M. You say too much term but Chicago has no plans on improving the team currently and apparently have this 5 year rebuilding plan and McGinn would be there for 3 years unless they trade him to a team looking for a bottom 6 player. He’s a more useful player than most other cap dumps.

The cost to dump a player is the cost, it's not relevant what Chicago plans to do or not. A late 4th doesn't result in another team eating $8M of cap over 3 years

You can find a home for him other than CHI. AZ would be better.

It sort of is relevant. McGinn would just be a player to eat up some ice time to give prospects more time to develop their game. Chicago isn’t exactly the best place to play right now. Especially if Kane is to be traded. And like I said. He’s a cap dump that’s more useful than other cap dumps.

The point of the rebuild is to develop young players in the NHL. We've got a lot of vets already around them. There's just no value to the Hawks here and a late 4th doesn't cover the $8M worth of cap they have to eat.

Also the point of rebuilding is letting your prospects develop and not rush them. There is a very good chance both Kane and Teows aren’t with the team beyond the trade deadline. Then you lose that veteran leadership there. There’s really only Tyler Johnson, Seth Jones, Connor Murphy, Jake McCabe, and Petr Mrazek that bring that after Teows and Kane are gone. And yet Seth Jones and Connor Murphy will more than likely become trade chips and yet the funny thing is there’s no young player of any value on the Blackhawks to pay money to. As much as you want to keep saying “8 MiLliOn In CaP SpAcE”. Did I say you have to keep him? Don’t you know Chicago will actually have a cap floor to reach? You can’t just throw all your prospects on the roster and be under the cap floor limit. Gotta eat up some cap space. That’s apart of rebuilding as well.

The roster is already filled right now, so no use this year. Jones isn't going anywhere, that cap is too hard to trade. McCabe isn't going anywhere with his NMC and being at home in Chicago now. We can, with no problem, sign free agents next offseason instead of giving up draft capital for someone of no long term value. We did it this past offseason and with those signings, are potential players we can retain and flip at the deadline. We'll rinse and repeat next offseason. We are building from the ground up, we aren't moving draft capital to a team who has a cap dump...that's insane.

It’s a cap dump of 8M for 3 years. There’s going to be teams with interest in him later on. You are heavily over exaggerating his cap hit. You don’t trade higher draft picks to dump a player of McGinn’s cap hit unless he is completely useless and on longer term than they should be. And even if Pittsburgh were to pay a price of a 2nd they’d get a good player back in return. Look at Nick Ritchie being dumped. He was traded along with a conditional 2nd or 3rd round pick and it got Toronto Ilya Lyubushkin. That’s the kind of return Chicago would have to make if Pittsburgh were to dump McGinn for anything higher than a 3rd.

Or Chicago could just say, 'no thanks' we aren't interested in going from the early 6th round to late 4th round for McGinn smile

Considering McGinn would be a cap dump casualty I’d more se be thinking a 7th would be the return. You still have to remember past cap dumps even for players like McGinns contract. They will still get a return. Even for rebuilding teams they’d send a draft pick in return. At the same time there’s currently no reason for us to make any trades anymore.

At the same time there's no reason for us to acquire McGinn so not sure where you're going with this. We have zero need for him which translates into, entice the Hawks to take him otherwise we are good.

Don’t ignore the fact that a bunch of your younger players are being thrown in to the fire of NHL action. That can stunt a young players growth in the league.

I'm not. I'm also not ignoring the fact that there a bunch of free agent veterans every season available that don't cost draft picks

I was ignoring that fact as well till earlier. But either way. McGinn can get a decent return with some teams. There’s teams out there that like term on contracts
