Severson trade offers

Created by: Dev17
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 3, 2022
Published: Aug. 3, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let’s not get into the “Severson signs 5.5x6 extension” for why teams are overpaying for him. Teams most likely will go for him as a rental with a chance of resigning that can be a 40 point second powerplay QB that will play a hair over 20 mins a night. I believe Dallas, Canucks, Sens, and Jets are probably teams with the most interest.
Trades
1.
NJD
  1. 2023 1st round pick (DAL)
DAL
Dallas have 4 strong prospects that I don’t think would be moved in a deal for Severson. Maybe a few picks which I think the devils will value more than B prospects
    2.
    NJD
    1. Boucher, Tyler
    Additional Details:
From Tom Fitzgeralds last interviews over the years he’s stressed “strength” and all that stuff. Even though I’m in the party that doesn’t see Boucher as a first round talent it seems many teams did. Think he’d be a piece in something if NJ goes to Ottawa to make a move happen. Ottawa out of all teams makes the most sense due to their top heavy talent and youth on the blue line. He’s in a small way similar to chabot. There’s also some salad prospects besides Boucher that maybe the devils covet.
    OTT
    3.
    NJD
    1. Lucius, Chaz
    Additional Details:
Lucius or Heinola seem to be the two prospects that could be in a deal for Severson if Winnipeg doesn’t move a high pick. Winnipeg is a big question mark going into the season but I can also see Severson possibly wanting to stay their longer term because He’s from Saskatchewan which
    WPG
    4.
    NJD
    1. 2023 1st round pick (VAN)
    Additional Details:
The pacific will be a pretty open division this year more so because theirs a lot of potentially good teams. I think Vancouver if healthy will be a good team. They underperformed last year but there’s a good team out there. I think up front will be surprisingly good and Severson could be a great asset for a postseason push. Don’t think anyone in the pool of prospects fits the bill but a first round pick and smaller assets probably does
    VAN
    5.
    NJD
    1. Holloway, Dylan
    Additional Details:
Oilers are the wild card I believe. With Bouchard Ceci and Barrie all on the right there isn’t an open spot. But Severson would be their top pair. There’s a lot of prospects that NJ could ask for, think Holloway would be the devils first ask but still a pick probably satisfies them. Barrie could be a guy going to maybe a third team especially if Edmonton retains some salary and nj retains on Severson.

The Jets might, maybe do Heinola, but definitely not Lucius.

Severson isnt getting a first. I just cant see it.

And dont use Romanov as an example of why he could. That was a horrific overpay and reach. Im open to debate if someone is able to offer trade comparibles

    If I’m Dallas, I’d offer Dellandrea+ instead

Canucks are not trading a 2023 first round pick for a 28 year old pending UFA

Stars seem like the perfect destination. I would retain and try to squeeze dellandrea and a 2nd out of them.

I don't understand why people like Severson this much. He is not worth a top prospect or any middling team's first.

Canucks are not going to pay a 1st for a rental, nor do they have the cap space. Even if he re-signs long term, that isn't happening.

At best, Canucks do a 2nd + prospect (anyone not named Lekkermaki and Rathbone). Unless Fitz wants to trade for JT Miller, then it would be Severson++.

Devon Toews got two 2nd round picks (I know the Isles were in a cap crunch, but still), so there is no way Severson is fetching any team's top prospect(s)...especially considering he's UFA next summer and ultimately not all that great defensively.

Ben chariot got a first plus and lindholm got a massive haul, Muzzin got a first and durzi. Toews was a steal in the eyes of most but has been preforming far better than the islanders anticipated. Severson is a RHD which isn’t an easy asset to get. Weegar Dumba Orlov and Dumoulin will most likely not be available. And retained Severson can be in the 2 millions when klingberg is 1.5 million more. Supply and Demand has a say in trade value

    1. Lindholm
    2. Risto
    3. Chiarot
    4. Savard
    5. Franson
    6. Yandle
    7. Sekera
    8. Bouwmeester
    9. Byfuglien
    10. Boyle

Severson most definitely gets a 1st rounder.
    Using comps...(and I owe @devil a post soon on Severson trade comps)....only helps argument that he'd get a 1st.
Thing is, I don't think NJD would look for picks in return.

I could see a younger forward with term maybe as the main piece in return

Some guys I think would be on Fitzy's list

    Dallas -- Harley Thomas
    Ottawa -- Ostapchuk, JBD, Boucher
    Winnipeg -- Samberg
    Vancouver -- ??
    Edmonton -- Lavoie, Kemp

Thanks for doing the heavy lifting on the explanation and examples on why Severson probably fetch’s a first

TDL moves are much different than offseason moves but even then, 1-3 are all prime examples of huge overpays for players who are grossly overrated by GMs and media. If the Devils waited to the TDL, I could see a bidding war arise. But not in the offseason. Devils fans have overrated the heck out of Severson in the past year or so for some reason, not sure why.

Canucks are not going to pay for a rental
Canucks expect everyone else to pay for their rental

That's fine. But why should NJD think differently about Miller?

(RHD often get a premium in trade market. Wingers often go for a discount)

I think trade deadline is most likely.

Especially since NJD likely have Luke Hughes and/or Shakir Mukhamadullin arriving when NCAA and KHL seasons are done.
And maybe Nemec ready after 3/4 season in AHL.

I'd maybe trade Heinola for Severson if he was willing to extend but no chance I'd trade Lucius for him.

Because contenders pay for rentals and the Canucks are not cup contenders this year. Shouldn’t be hard to understand. I personally don’t think Miller to New Jersey makes sense anyway

If Severson comes with an extension, then that would be a fair comp, no?
