The Sabres are at least two years away from competing. Maybe Mittelstadt for Kane retained so Kane can get a feel for the team. Otherwise, just wait until next year to see if Kane wants to sign with the Sabres.

But how’s that good from the hawks eyes getting nothing for him.?

Kane has a full NMC. He goes where he wants to go. Or stays and waits until next year to sign with another team and Chicago gets nothing. It's also up to Buffalo whether they want him or not. They can miss the playoffs with or without Kane and keep all their assets. Why trade a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Mittelstadt to finish just above, or below, Chicago overall. How is that good for the Sabres?

Why on earth would the Sabres trade for ANY rental at the trade deadline???

Sabres are close to ready to make a move like that
Maybe we try to sign Kane as a UFA, but we aren’t trading for him- no way

I’m pretty sure Kane will go to Dallas because he’s familiar with those players and so might sign an extension thereby increasing the trade pkg. unless the Hawks would rather not move him within the division.

Hawks pass on this and so does Buffalo. Dach is a solid prospect at this point. Mittlestadt is close to bust territory. Buffalo could end up being a playoff team in 2024 making the 1st late and would make this trade very bad for the Hawks as such.
