Fair deal, similar to what Matt Roy and Grzcelyk got, and SJS locks up a potential Top-4 blue-liner for 4 years without overpaying. Good signing.

How’s it an issue for a guy who’s voiced desire to stay long term, and even the desire to be the Sharks captain, also coming from the mouths of Sharks management?

Tavares voiced desire to stay in NY, we saw how that turned out...

This is one of those price points that is never going to be "fair". Realistically, if he's a decent top 4 D, this is a good deal for the team, and he's being underpaid by at least a bit. If he's actually better suited to the bottom pair, then this is an overpay. I like the bet by the Sharks for sure, and the player guarantees himself some money, so I think the deal is good, just that when it's said and done, nobody will be looking back at it and thinking the player was worth right around this, it will either have been a significant overpayment, or a steal.

Yes but Ferraro is quite literally the complete opposite of Tavares in personality and attitude. Tavares also was a completely different situation (he’s making 8 digits) - which will never be the AAV of Ferraro unless he turns into a god lol.

Mario is an insane culture driver, leader, shot-blocking maniac and still hasn't reached his offensive potential. He is easily the future captain of the Sharks. His will to win is beyond any other shark by far...

This deal will never be a "significant" overpayment. You'd know that if you have watched Ferraro every night. He is well-worth this AAV.

Hertl has him beat in the win category I’d say but we’re on the same page.

I'm no Sharks fan, but may I note that the Sharks have a talented guy with a dynamic personality by the name of Tomas Hertl who's signed for the next 8 years (at which point he'll be 36) and likely be a Shark for life?

If you knew Mario you'd know that just by watching him he is going to be a captain. All of his coaches, sharks management and teammates have pegged Mario as captain material. Hertl is AMAZING but doesn't have that Mario attitude that will do absolutely anything to win.

Hertl or Ferraro are A’s or C’s. Hertls only case against is he wears his emotion often - if he’s having a bad game at times his attitude shows through his play in terms of frustration. Sometimes his frustration leads to a dynamite period that turns him around, and sometimes it just leads to more frustration. I don’t recall ever seeing Ferraro’s frustration show. (This isn’t knocking Hertl he’s just an emotional guy which is awesome to see compared to me watching the same interview from 150 nhl players).

But hey, seems like a popular player amongst his fellow Sharks and the fans, so guess we'll see.

they have a lot of money on the books for years to come... if he wanted to stay, its surprising they didnt go 8 years already... maybe they buyout vlasic by then or move EK65, but one would think hes a guy you'd want to go 8 years with

There's this thing called bridge deals....they're effective at measuring long term aav . Grier is not Wilson.

Ferraro isn't an established long-term guy yet-he's got a lot of potential, but Grier seems to have learned from his predecessor as Sharks GM in Doug Wilson that giving players 8 year deals with huge AAV's based on potential alone handcuffs your team down the road. This is a good signing-no overcommitment, and not much risk.

In just a few short seasons he's become the most popular Shark right up there with Hertl and Meier. Maybe he has surpassed them already. the fans LOVE Mario.

Well, this isn't exactly a bridge deal (since Ferraro will be a UFA when this expires), but yes agreed, Grier is not Wilson. Smart signing.
