Description
Archibald probably gets waiver claimed at some point this season. I really don’t understand that signing at all. And I’m not knocking Archibald either. He’s a more than capable, legit NHL bottom 6.

But It’s not like the Pens don’t have depth with Poehling, OConnor, Zohorna, Puustinen, Poulin, Hallander.

They could have(should’ve have) used that 900k-1M on Larsson or Milano. Seems like that amount might get it done too. It seems like the UFA market has dried up.

Heinen is 26 years old and coming off an 18 goal and 33 point season. And he can be plugged-in up and down the lineup without being a big drop off or downgrade. And he couldn’t get a deal more than 1 year at 1M per.

I’d hate to trade Friedman. He’s on a good contract for 2 seasons and can play LHD/RHD equally well. But with Ty Smith and Ruhwedel they can afford to move him. And Ty Smith has options so he can be moved up and down all season and not have to pass through waivers.

I hate to move Nylander too but he’s a top 6 or bust winger prospect and with Guentzel, Rust, Rakell, Zucker, Puustinen, Poulin, OConnor, Legare he’s blocked and the Pens could afford to move him too; as a sweetener.

Pens system is the thinest at RHD and is lacking any good RHD prospects. So getting Ian Moore and a draft pick would be nice.

Anaheim fans probably won’t like this trade but Friedman is on a good contract for 2 seasons and should be able to be traded at the TD to a contender.

And Nylander is only 24 years old with NHL experience and coming off a 22 goal, 42 points in 67 games season in the AHL.

I don’t see any positive in this to deal Moore and a 3rd

Ducks just roll their youngsters no reason for them to pay for someone that isn’t a significant upgrade on what they have

I appreciate the level of research and explanation in your post, even as penguins focused as it is.

From the Ducks side though, Moore is going to be our big RHD shutdown guy probably next season when we have a huge gap at RD with Shatty and Klingberg leaving.

Friedman is okay, but I don't know that he's any improvement on what we would get from Moore, and is older and more expensive. Nylander is interesting, but we have a lot of decent LW prospects, what we really need is a knockout 1-2LW guy in McTavish's age range, preferably a speedster who can drive the play and carry the puck.

Archibald would probably get waived by us too, just no roster room for him.

Friedman is only making like 775k. That’s about what Moore would make minimum so he’s not really more expensive lol. And Nylander is a RW. He played RW for the most part in WBS where he went off.
With that being said, I agree with ducks fans that the ducks have no incentive to do this. Even if it was just Moore going the pens way. The pens are sending quantity not quality.
Friedman may be worth a 5th at best, Archibald is worth a 7th at best, Nylander is probably worth a 4th at best.
Nothing right now in that package screams a solid RHD prospect should be the return. The pens really shouldn’t sell Nylander either. They need players like him to hopefully take the next step and give the pens a cheap option that could push out players like Kapanen and Zucker.

Yeah, quantity is the problem, we're already short on ice time to figure out what we've got in our system that's NHL caliber for the next year.

We're at the point where we can send a couple of prospects that are still NHL question marks to pick up a guy who is currently boxed out from playing in the organization, but is NHL ready.

Nylander is 24 years old. And once a player gets to be 25-26 years old, I wouldn’t even considered him a prospect anymore. 23-24 years old a player still has value as a prospect in my opinion.

And Nylander is a top 6 or bust prospect. He can’t be a 4th line player or even start off on the bottom 6 and move up eventually.

So he’s 24 years old and blocked by Guentzel, Rust, Rakell(all signed long term). Plus Zucker, Kappy, Heinen this season. And Puustinen, Poulin, Legare, OConnor in the near future.

All 4 of those guys are right on the doorstep too. OConnor, Puustinen and Hallander all even got NHL experience last season(but Hallander most likely ends up a bottom 6).

Pens should trade him now while he is still just 24 and has more value in my opinion. And coming off a good season in the AHL(22 goals and 42 points in 67 games).

I mean Zucker can and should play 3rd line with Carter. Just don’t think he and Malkin gel. Nylander can play 3rd line. I truly think a trade is coming with a forward whether it be McGinn and/or Zucker getting shipped out. That might just happen in preseason/start of the season though when teams may get hit with some injuries. Especially if Nylander impresses in camp/preseason.
