TBL offseason Miller

Created by: JTBF81
Team: 2022-23 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 3, 2022
Published: Aug. 5, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It would be a more "all in" type move that Tampa doesn't usually make for a one year rental they can't re-sign, but Miller would be the kind of top 6 winger that might make them change their mind. Other prospects and pieces could be available, as well as potentially less retention on Miller depending on what would be involved. It's unlikely of course, but this is probably the most Tampa would consider doing knowing it's for just 1 year of Miller(with no chance at re-signing him).

Canucks don’t have cap space for the retention and taking back Killorn, maybe if you replaced him with Colton that would be more appetizing

I don't see Tampa moving Colton unless they think they can't re-sign him(I don't think they are at that point). If the retention on Miller was dropped and Tampa dropped the 3rd and Vancouver Schenn, then I believe it might still work #'s wise after Tampa made another move.

Yeah, Schenn may take over for Myers. He's likely dropped anyway since Tampa can't make the cap work with him in the deal and dropping the retention on Miller.

While unlikely Tampa would be willing to put together the best overall package since they couldn’t re-sign him, Miller is much better than Killorn, Hagel, Names, Colton, or Paul(basically anyone Tampa will have at wing in the top 6 aside from Kuch and Stamkos if he doesn’t play center). Foote has shown improvement but he’s at best a 4/5 fringe, and closer to a 5/6. Tampa would have to probably add or modify the trade to have a chance, but Miller would be a huge upgrade. He was used very poorly by Cooper when he was with Tampa, and while the return for him helped get Coleman, he had a lot more to his game. Tampa’s right side is the weak spot with or without Foote, as it’s not like he’s going to be the big difference maker or anything. Tampa can make the cap numbers work, they’d just likely not be able to sign Motte if there was no retention on Miller in the above trade.

I seriously can't wait till Miller leaves Vancouver for nothing. This is a wild over pay for Miller if you ask me.

It may be, but for a player of Miller's caliber, it's going to likely take a 1st, decent roster player(likely for cap reasons from most teams) and young player/prospect. Tampa can't offer a 1st until '25, where as most other offers offer up a '23 or '24 1st. Killorn would have to go for cap reasons, and since Tampa won't be able to re-sign either Miller or Killorn, that doesn't matter. Finley is Tampa's best center prospect, but C is a position that Tampa is fairly deep at and so the loss isn't as bad. Foote is the biggest loss, as Tampa isn't nearly as deep at RD, and would have to hope that the rest of their RD plus a couple prospects will be ready soon. It's very unlikely that Tampa could beat several other teams' offers, but if Vancouver does trade him, this would be the best Tampa could probably offer.

Why would tampa give up so much for 2 players they got rid of?
