If I'm SJ, I take this and run.

I think it hurts CAL more than it will help

Gonna be honest, I think Meier would prefer to sign a long term deal in the 7-8 mil range than take a 1 year QO and risk depreciating his value either through injury or poor play

Could be but Calgary would need to be certain Meier will resign with them in that range before giving up such a big haul for him. That means either a sign and trade for 8 years or SJ lets them talk to Meier and come to an agreement on a 7 year deal before the trade goes down.

Also players like Meier, Dubois and their agents had to have been paying very close attention to how the Matthew Tkachuk trade went down. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if top RFAs like Meier and Dubois try to do something similar next year. Meier especially since his QO is much higher than Dubois' is and even higher than Tkachuk's was.
