Every leaf fan remembering Bergeron’s OT goal from 2013:

“Take these memories that are haunting me”

usual suspects making sure this signing which has nothing to do with the leafs involves the leafs

still a bargain, but it says something that he didn't sign 750K like Spezza... maybe bc Bergy has won a cup before

Bergeron was a top 10-15 center last season, immensely better than Spezza was when he signed. There's a limit to what "hometown discounts" can do.

no matter how good he is, he is always allowed to sign for lg minimum...
i agree bergy is worth this contract, but he still could have chosen to take less, knowing the team is tight to the cap and likely to lose craig smith bc of it

AAV = Base salary plus performance bonuses. In this case, it's $2,5M + $2,5M.

Should Bergeron get all performance bonuses they will be paid as overages the next year I think.

Ok thanks.

This is a good deal ... THIS YEAR. Depending on how many performance bonuses he gets, that could push Boston over the cap and that will come out of their cap next year. I guess they think this is the last year they can compete for the Cup.

Bergeron with that contract might be the #1 bargain deal of the entire league, IDK what more do you want from him lol

again you're not wrong, but if this is really his last year and trying to win, he COULD have taken 750K to help the team, and chose the money

it's not like he hasn't made plenty in his career, and sure he could have gotten more, but he isn't doing what helps the team the most here

I'd love to know what a good signing actually looks like from the one person who voted no.

Bergeron is still their number 1 centre. Spezza was a 4th liner, borderline 3rd.

i agree
but he could have saved the team a little more money... that improves the odds of winning the cup if you dont have to give away craig smith before opening night... thats all im saying

"Boston will regress and have to rebuild after this season" - said in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 202forever.....

Pretty much the wings of the 2010-2016. Just pushing the can down the road.

Yup, I feel like the wheels would have to fall off after this season, especially if Pasta doesn't sign since he's a UFA, and assuming Bergy is done

To a certain degree, sure. But the Wings did not have young franchise players like Pastrnak and McAvoy when they had to enter a full rebuild.

Reports of the Bruins’ demise were premature.

I can’t believe people are criticizing him for not taking less money. He’s still playing at a $9M or more level and he’s never had a contract with more than $6.875M AAV. He owes them nothing. Letang and Ovechkin were in similar situations, slightly younger but also in a position to take a discount late in their careers to help their teams remain contenders, and they took pretty much full market value. In fact, in at least Ovechkin’s case, I felt like the team decided to pay him a bit of a premium in recognition of him having been underpaid for so long. You could argue that Bergeron deserved similar treatment. One of the biggest reasons Boston has been a perennial contender is that he and Marchand, and more recently Pastrnak, have been hugely underpaid, equating to an extra $10M per year in cap space.
