So instead of Haula, Zacha is going to cost more this year and produced less based on last years numbers. Both are UFAs after this season.

I had him 3.1 x 3 while I get that this could end up being great as if he sucks cut him loose and move on but if that was the case why not just keep the cheaper Haula

Cause what if he leaves as a UFA. Gonna be a wait and see game I guess

My bet is that Wagner/Clifton on opening day is sent down to the minors and has to clear waivers and gets buried. Otherwise something has to give and someone gets traded yes. Over the cap with no one going on LTIR is an issue.

Cheaper than DeBrusk (I was somewhat expecting Zacha to get the same 2 x $4m)

Really confused by a 1 yr deal. Still helps the Bruins on this year's cap, though, so I like it.

Not a fan of just a 1yr deal as he will be a UFA after the season. I think he's prime for a breakout season honestly. Good news is he's lived in the Boston area for a few years now as his gf/wife is from the area.

For those talking about the cap...

Wagner can be sent down and save about $1.1 million
Marchand or McAvoy can be put on LTIR as they'll be out till early December

When everyone returns you probably see one of Reilly, Smith (if a youngster breaks out) or Forbort moved. Wild card would be Clifton as Zboril can play RD despite being a LHD.

Should be longer term. If Boston isnt a Playoff team he has no reason to stay if he doesn't want to.

Not an ideal contract, more years would've been nicer, but at least it's not Crouse money which Zacha was prob using as a comparable. It's a good prove it contract for both sides, and with the amount of money coming off the books next year Sweeney can navigate the direction he wants to go with the team and where Zacha fits in it better. If there was a fair option I would pick it rather than yes.

I’m surprised they signed him for only one year with him eligible to become a UFA at the end of it. I assumed the main reason they traded the lower-priced Haula for him was that Haula was only a year away from being a UFA, so they saw Zacha as somebody they could get more years out of. I guess they may think he has more potential upside than Haula even for the coming season because of his age, but this contract makes me wonder if they acquired him only as insurance in case Bergeron and/or Krejci didn’t come back, and now they’re just thinking of him as a stopgap until Marchand comes back. They’re over the cap if they don’t have somebody on LTIR, so if they need to dump someone to make room for Marchand, this contract has a better chance of being tradeable than if they had signed him multi-year. Easy come, easy go.

Surprised at a lot of these comments.
No way Sweeney won this signing.
He walked a 25yr old RFA to a 1 yr window into UFA ...at 500k more than his QO. What the fudge???? You just gave Zacha $500k free. What?!?!?

Never said he won in fact this is bad the only benefit would be say Zacha doesnt adapt to the Bruins system sucks and instead of having another guy disappointing they can just let him walk. But if he rebounds and does stupid well then Bruins just walked him to UFA for nothing and some other team could scoop him up

I think this is a bad deal, because Boston is now over the cap and they are too old to compete. I think they will get worse this season and they might even miss the playoffs. If that happens, they could panic sell at the deadline.

Imagine being handed Bergeron and Krejci on a silver platter, and then do this with the same amount of cap space.

I'm so tired of this team, man. This rebuild will last 24 years.
