Cap Doesnt Work As Is

Created by: bruinsdude77
Team: 2022-23 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 8, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
As is, the Bruins can't get under the salary cap with a healthy 23-man roster even with Foligno, Nosek, and Wagner buried. The team may not fix this right away given the early LTIR space, but eventually someone needs to be removed. However, it doesn't need to be Reilly or anyone else on the ideal roster.

There will be a short buyout window with Zacha now signed, but only Foligno can open enough space as a buyout to add a replacement forward - although there still wouldn't be enough room for that forward to be Nosek. I also question whether the Bruins would buyout Foligno at all. I can only see it if they tell him the alternative is Providence and he would prefer free agency (in which case go for mutual termination instead).

Regardless of whether Foligno is buried or bought out, Nosek cannot fit in the healthy 23-man roster. So may as well trade him if it saves Reilly or someone else. That opens up nearly $1MM, more than enough to bring in another good two-way forward or perhaps have a PTO camp battle. Larsson, Rask, Brassard, Stepan, Gagner, Chiasson, Motte, and ZAR all still available. Maybe you can even chase Rodrigues or Milano. Without further trades, Kessel or Stastny won't be options.

Just trade Reilly and Nosek for late picks. Problem solved.

No need to carry the full 23 man roster. Go with 13F, 7D & 2G. Send down Steen and your $1.4M over. Then you just trade Reilly for a bag of pucks and then your cap compliant.

... I did trade Nosek for late picks.

Not sure they want to sell Reilly and if they do it will be for at least a third-round pick. Reilly is a fine cap value and there would be interest.

I'd prefer the flexibility to carry 23 players and I am not confident that Steen clears waivers, especially not multiple times. But by trading Nosek and replacing him with someone cheaper and burying Foligno and Wags, they are at 23, cap compliant, and aren't giving away Reilly.

Doubt you can get a 3rd for him at this point. Supply and demand. Should have been done before free agency. No market for him now. Take what you can get and take the cap space. Can sign a vet at league minimum for depth.

My bad....I thought Steen was waivers exempt still. I don't think your going to get much more than a 5th for Reilly at the moment with over a third of the league over the cap and the next third having little cap space.

You very well might be right but I'd rather hold on to him now than give him away for nothing. He has another year left on his contract, so time for his trade value to go back up. If they can get away with keeping him, I think they will.

I’d rather have the cap space. He’s better than he gets credit for. He’s still just an overpaid #5. Easily replaced with cheaper.

Had Grizz ans Mac not been out to start the year he’d been gone already. When they signed Zboril it should have been the nail in the coffin. To scared to pull the trigger.
