Description

It was on this day Wayne Gretzky traded. So for fun lets recreate it but with McDavid

Granted I don't know what a McDavid trade would look like so we will use the formula from the Gretzky trade. It will be just McDavid going the other way to keep things simple. So yes it may seem like an overpay but McDavid is that untouchable it would have to be an offer the Oilers couldn't refuse. For reference

Here is a bold thought. Leafs take because, Matthews never wanted to be a leaf and walks for nothing in two seasons. Instead they get 4 years of McDavid with the cost of the 1st round pick. Would you rather have to years of Matthews or 4 of McDavid? I think it is worth the pick to risk on a Canadian born player instead of the American in Canada on staying with the leafs. Edmonton would pass on this from there point of view without issue.

Don’t think Hughes at his peak will be THAT far apart from McDavid. I’m not saying Hughes will be McDavid, but I don’t think the difference will be 4 firsts.

In fact these are all pretty big overpays, the reality is any trade involving McDavid wouldn’t be worth it because the team trading for him would have nothing left to build around him.

Thats true I think Hughes might end up going down as a top 5 playmaker of all time in my honest opinion, the devils have many assets they can trade but Hughes would be the main piece if i am New Jersey

The problem with a McDavid trade is that very few teams will end up better for having done it. I think the Devils are able to make a real trade offer, but it cannot include a Hughes. There's really no way to strike a fair deal.

There is no winner in a Connor McDavid trade. Even if Ken Holland fleeced a team, he would be chased out of Edmonton, his Canadian citizenship would be revoked, and he'd have to live in a foreign country in exile, likely getting daily death threats until the end of his days.

Honestly, if the Oilers trade McDavid, they should just fold the franchise.

The best player hockey has ever seen was traded for 15 million dollar which today is 37.5 million dollars nearly half of todays salary cap. Makes is more crazy. What was your reaction to said trade when it happened 34 years ago today?

He's no McDavid, but he just put up a 95 point pace in his 20 year old season, and his contract starts this year. The argument could be made that Hughes' trade value is very similar McDavid's due to age and contract. I wouldn't trade Hughes for McDavid in any trade the Oilers would accept.
