I like the idea. I would just switch up the lines. I don’t think Eklund will be a center in nhl at least not for a while.

Look at your cap space for next year, You don't have $9,500,000 to $10,000,000 per to offer Matthew Barzal. $17,000,000 to sign 9 players isn't going to cut it.

No one ever uses long term outlook, shame.

I mean value wise it is fair but if the Sharks are trading Meier they would want picks and prospects to help a rebuild and Islanders would only trade for Meier to play with Barzal. Both teams say no but Meier with Barzal would be very nice

This is a non-issue. Moving out Labanc and Simek opens up cap space (~7mil). So does buying out Vlasic (frees up ~3.5mil in space). You have a few expiring UFA deals as well and can trade out a mid-contract guy like Lindblom. I get that they all have to be replaced, but Sharks would replace them internally with guys like Robins/Coe, Hatakka/Cicek, Gushchin. Then you also have the salary cap increasing between 1-2mil next year.

I do consider long term outlook in my AGM rosters. Two other points:

1) long-term outlook/roster isn't set in stone -- teams work their way around cap difficulties all the time, it's part of being a GM in the NHL or we wouldn't have trades/signings at the TDL and offsesason, and

2) SJ already has Meier, who's set to receive a similar contract to Barzal. It's not like this roster isn't grounded in something similar to what already exists.

Matthew Barzal is set to get around either $9,500,000 to $10,000,000 per long term, There's no way Timo Meier is getting anywhere near that kind of money.

San Jose has one of the oldest rosters in the league, The need to start rebuilding not acquiring players like Matt Barzal.

Meier's likely getting somewhere between 8.5-9mil. You're accurately projecting Barzal between 9.5-10mil. Obviously, "anywhere near that kind of money" isn't the case here.

SJ's currently the 9th oldest roster in the league at 27.6 for their average age, which isn't bad. But regardless, Barzal's 25 years old -- he's half a year younger than Meier.

I think that’s a bit rich for what Barzal has brought. Huberdeau just signed 10.5 and he had 115. Barzal has 1 season years ago he was over 80. I feel like $8.5 is more reasonable

I'll keep the Goal scorer, and hope he takes a little less on an 8 year deal next offseason.

In pretty much every way. I don't think the trade makes much sense for either team to be honest, but Meier is just a better all-around player.
