Created by: Hammerwise
Team: 2022-23 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 11, 2022
Published: Aug. 11, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Camp decides alot of things:

RW: is Brink ready? Is Allison ready? The fight between those 2 and Tippett for 2 spots will be good.
LW: Farabee will start the season on IR, so that gives Cates/Kerfoot/Deslauriers some time to see who grabs those spots.

Ultimately, Kerfoot and Kapanen aren;t long term solutions and both at TDL have more value than now, but both need to be moved for cap reasons.

Theres 8 skaters 25 yrs old or less, and 6 of them have less than 80 games NHL experience. Its a rebuild and gives time for PHI to evaluate who's got it and who doesn;t.

At TDL, of those below I would see PHI re-signing or moving Sanheim, trading Kerfoot, and possibly listening on Kapanen, based on what the youth do.

The taxi squad is probably not the first callups, but the most talented in the AHL.

Trades
1.
PHI
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
Additional Details:
Will Kerfoot waive his NTC?
Toronto needs about 2.6mil free to ice a 19-20 skater team, so Kerfoot goes
TOR
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Kerfoot is a nice middle six LW, Farabee starts season on LTIR, and when he returns Kerfoot goes down the lineup
2.
PHI
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (PHI)
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
JVR covers some of the production when Max P is on LTIR, and gives CAR a big body for PP. JVR is a guarantee for 20-30 goals even in 3rd line minutes.
CAR
  1. van Riemsdyk, James ($3,500,000 retained)
  2. 2023 4th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
JVR at 50% is almost a PHI 2nd and 2025 3rd, the EDM 4th balances it. JVR at 50% gets that at TDL and a bit more. PHI doesn’t have to make this move to make the cap, they do it for value now or at deadline
3.
PHI
  1. Kapanen, Kasperi
  2. 2024 5th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
PIT gets under cap, gets much needed physicality. Gets a 3rd and big body prospect, finally healthy, who had a good NHL audition last year
PIT
  1. MacEwen, Zack
  2. Ratcliffe, Isaac
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
PHI gets needed speed and the Kapanen name, a workable middle 6 RW if Brink/Allison/Tippett cant make it

Not bad on the JVR deal but I still think Canes look elsewhere before doing something like this

I like these trades. I feel like you could get Kerfoot for a lesser pick tho, like a 6th or maybe even for free cause Toronto has to be desperate

Pittsburgh won't be moving Kapanen for cap, they need to move a defender as they have 8, and at least 6 are top 6 defenders and not 7th Dmen.

Nah, he's a too valuable player to throw away for a 6th, and lots of teams will want him. Not sure where things are with Sandin, maybe they have an agreement in place but if he's sitting the Leafs just need to move 1.5m off the books to be compliant.

They are better off waiting until they have to be compliant, because people do get injured at camp and during preseason, so they don't have to be desperate to clear cap at this point in time.

Its fair value wise and I like the deal, but the lens need to move a defender. I hope it's either Dumoulin or POJ but we'll see.

Waiting and hoping for an injury is also a risk as you get closer to the season

Just because CBJ undersold on Bjorkstrand, doesn't mean everyone else will sell low on their players. A third is more than reasonable.

There is no risk, if you can trade him now for nothing. Can trade him, then as well. They wouldn't be waiting for an injury to happen necessarily, just an opportunity to make a good trade. Players on any team can get injured, so that could open up an avenue for a trade, rosters will be shuffled around still, so it's just about waiting for an opportunity. Worse case you place him on waivers and he gets claimed, a 6th isn't that valuable anyways.

Just take CAR for example instead of acquiring JVR, they could opt for the lower salary and acquire Kerfoot.

Pens should probably take that. Especially if Nylander makes the jump.

I agree, some Pens fans thinking that the Pens have too many dmen, are putting alot of faith in SMith and POJ. Ruhwedel is a nice 7th and Friedman an okay 8th or 9th, but ideally that 3rd LD is Smiths or POJ, but neither are ready for 2LD. So I can only see them moving 1 of the loser for 3 LD (Smith or POJ) or Ruhwedel, none of which make a lot or would have real value. I cant see them moving any of the top 5 veteran dmen.

POJ and Smith are nice prospects/young guys and probably the best ready now Pen prospects, but that doesn;t mean they are league wide high prospects. Pens are an old core and they need to win now.

Nylander and Poulin are not the shiney youngsters they used to be, and Ratcliffe is probably an even bet to play 3LW or 4LW over either of them or poehling.

No one is jumping to grab Zucker, the only big money guy, but PHI could offer with Ratcliffe and MacEwen, something PENs lack, size and physicality

No thanks. Someone just offered a 2nd and 3rd.

Btw Kerfoot doesn’t waive to go to Philly.

Poulin is still young and shiney and possibly is a mid season call up. But Nylander needs to be ready. Smith likely gets sent down. I think GMRH traded for him because he was waiver exempt. POJ likely gets that 3LD spot, Ruh and Friedman are a solid 7th/8th d pair.
O’Connor can be sent down forward wise. I could see them also trading McGinn. So this trade and a McGinn trade could make room for younger cheaper guys.
Guentzel, Crosby, Rakell, Zucker, Malkin, Rust, Heinen, Carter, Nylander, Ratcliff, Blueger, Zohorna, Archibald, MacEwan would be solid for forwards.
