Edmonds Kadri Build

Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2022
Published: Aug. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Big Lucas Edmonds fan. Late bloomer with unconventional path through to the NHL with big potential. Coupled with Kadri signing. Also generally allowing some of that young Swedish talent (Berggren, Soderblom and Johansson) to step up too, leaving some players to be relegated to scratch or the Griffins.

Still new to how this trade stuff works, so please be nice.

Yzerman isn't gaining to sign Kadri to a 7yr contract. I'd be surprised if Yzerman signs Kadri at all.

No it's his character and the length of his contract. He gave Chiarot a 4 years and popular perception of player ability aside that was surprising. So far he has done everything slowly. Every move has been made minimizing risk making sure every piece fits before making it more permanent. A lot of people are saying he's trying to speed up the rebuild by signing a bunch of UFAs and I think that it's wrong. This is likely the last season of Detroit being in the lottery and he wants to save the picks he has and Chiarot getting a 4yr deal could've been what it took to sign him and Detroit needed someone on the left side who can play a couple of seasons giving time for some of the prospects to develop. A lot of people are predicting a big move coming and it probably is but I wouldn't expect it until the TDL.

This might be a silly question, but is there value in signing someone expensive on a short term to keep the quality up short term? Like signing a 5+million per year player on a 1-2y contract. Like Kessel or Kadri (had he been an option) taking the spot of Rasmussen or Erne?

It really depends on the situation. With a players over 30 of course teams will want less term and might pay more to keep the term down. But it's not that easy because players might take a little less to get more term. They are looking to get as much guaranteed money as they can. Kadri had the best season of his career so he is really looking to capitalize on that. I highly doubt he will have another season like this so it basically down hill from here but how many good seasons does he have left? A couple of things that you have consider for Kadri. Colorado is stacked so can produce like this on another team and his suspension history. When he gets frustrated he tends to do things that get him suspended. I have no idea what Kessel is looking for in term and salary but at 34 this will be his last standard contract he signs after this year any contract he signs will be a 35+ contract.
