The Only Leafs and Canucks trade for Miller that is logical

Created by: Faulk_my_Dzingel
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2022
Published: Aug. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Canucks get some Swedish connection nostalgia. One more year of cap control with Nylander vs Miller. Holl to play the right side who is great on the PK and despite what most leaf fans think is still viable. The guy averaged 20 mins a night. You also get Sandin who is being experimented with on the right side. A potential puck moving defenseman if Hughes or Larsson get injured.

Leafs get cap flexibility for 2023. An extremely versatile win now player in Miller. Penalty Kill replacement in Schenn. And can fill remaining holes with more cap flexibility. They also keep Mr. Versatility in Kerfoot which is extremely underrated.

The Canucks really don’t need more wingers though. They already have Boeser, Garland, Mikheyev, Pearson, Hoglander, Podkolzin, and Kuzmenko who will all want ice time. They just need D and prospects

I suppose you're sending Kerfoot Holl and a 1st for 50% retention of Miller hey?

No, I'm not sending anything. Certainly not twice his value.

Nice. So I guess the purpose of this site is to not try and figure out what if scenarios for two sides of the coin.

Certainly, you accomplished neither. Niemela, kerfoot and a 1st for Miller 50% retained is probably fair value and what both teams need but leafs aren't interested in giving up those assets for a rental.

And the nucks don’t need another winger or a ld. Kerfoot could play 3c I think for them. And they need help at rd right now but I think Niemela would work to maybe

You know what man. I can get behind that. I am sorry I misunderstood your tone. I just keep seeing Miller trades that are insane and figured I would try and see what would actually work for both sides.

Likely. But also what everyone needs to realize is for the 2023 season the Leafs have 69 Million tied up in 12 players. Only 7 of which are forwards. And losing a player like Bunting after we lost Hyman would hurt again. The Cap is expected to rise only minimally. Out of moving any of the big contracts, Nylander is the easiest. Making a move for winning today is an option, maybe not the best option, but it is certainly an option.

A team with an older core that would like to re sign Miller would pay the price Vancouver would want. Unfortunately flames are in the same division otherwise that trade would make sense. Maybe a team like Washington or Boston fits that mold.

The team isn't getting better though. Moving nylander and Holl for Miller and schenn doesn't move the needle. Then you gave up Sandin and left us with an aging broken left side.

I do think there is a good amount of logic for Toronto to pursue Miller if they can extend him. Albeit I think either Nylander would have to be included or Toronto would have to be very confident in their ability to move Muzzin on his new M-NTC next summer.

As for the logic I think Miller's playstyle as well as his ability to play center are both things Toronto needs. IMO Tavares while still a solid player has definitely showed signs of slowing down and is likely more suited for the wing now. Miller is still a very strong skater and good at center and could really boost the 2nd lines scoring

Tavares has never been fast. He will be the 2c. Miller to Toronto makes zero sense other than a rental for 2lw. I think there will be cheaper options trade value wise.

The Leafs have needed a Miller type player for quite some time. His ability to play centre or wing is exactly what they need like you say. While I don’t think Tavares can’t play centre anymore, the flexibility added with Miller is invaluable.

And I disagree with keeping Tavares at 2C if the option to move him to wing is there. Plenty of top centers were moved to the wing later in their careers. Giroux, Pavelski, and Stamkos come to mind as recent examples.

Your above offer of Topi a 1st and Kerfoot would be avery good if Toronto really thinks they can win it

I have no doubt in Tavares ability to take faceoffs but I do think running him on a line where Miller can do more of the 200 ft heavy lifting would ve a drastic. Especially with his style

Toronto can certainly not re sign Miller and really shouldn't. It is a contract that will age poorly. I do wish flames could get their hands on him. He would line up well with their window and a 2c would be a perfect fit right now.
