Better player right now is Pettersson, no contest. Higher ceiling (and thus the player I'd take for the future) is Hughes, but he's not there yet.

Depends if you value potential or talent right now more, Petey’s better now but Hughes is the guy I’d take 5 years from now ( if I had to choose now )

Can say the Hughes was the better player after this past season, but long-term, I see Pettersson as ultimately being the better player long-term as Hughes doesn't have the same level of defensive consciousness that Pettersson does. I also expect both players to score at about the same rate over their respective careers

Hughes has already passed Pettersson.

NHL.com article discusses the top centers in league in 3 years.

Here are the guys they listed:

McDavid
Matthews
Hughes <--him
MacKinnon
Barkov

hot take: I could see Hughes being a top 5 center someday. Hughes any day of the week.

And nobody ever comes up with any sort of argument or rationale as to how Hughes is better than him

It took Hughes 30 seconds and two laps around the black box to produce a mini-Jack Hughes. EP couldn’t deliver a mini-Elias Pettersson until the draft.

that's right, he is better defensively, he's also 2 years older and hasn't been playing on a rebuilding team his entire career. Hughes will get there.

Already producing at a higher rate while being 2.5 years younger

When I included Jack Hughes in my team of overrated players I wish I had this poll to further back me up

Reading is hard for some people...

Person is saying Pettersson is better than Hughes because Pettersson is better defenisvely. I show an example of how being better defensively doesn't mean better overall. And somehow you twist my words.

Yes, Jack had a better year offensively than Petey last season, but what about over both players careers as a whole? I think Petey has scored at a higher rate from that vantage point
