That’s a lot of junk going San Jose’s way for their best player as well as their only young RD. Quality>Quantity

They would want Jarvis. Canes shouldn’t do that.

Not to mention there’s no way they can re sign Meier, Aho, Pesce and Jarvis all in 2 offseasons

That's more than necessary to acquire Meier, who's QO is 10mil I believe. 100% of his base contract is the rule as far as I understand it. You can at least remove Coghlan and a 2nd

Kinda disagree, suzuki, gunler are both good prospects of ours, coglan not too sure of but young enough to still develop properly. Bear is 50/50 shot amd a 1 year cap dump of gardiner who could play this year; amd merkley is still risky for both sharks or canes rm so i think value for overall trade is fair given the draft picks 10% sal retention on gardiner and prospects for a team needing to rebuild and may lose Meier at emd of the season if he chooses to not resign

You think San Jose would trade a ppg 25 yo for a late 2nd and a depth defenseman? Holy hell

The canes wouldn’t retain on Gardiner. They can’t afford the 10 million QO next year so whether the trade value is fair it doesn’t matter. If they make any moves at all before Patches gets back it will be a pure rental with retention.

Does he resign to a team that is in dire need of a rebuild and possibly “waste” his career or go to a playoff team for 1 year to possibly win a cup and showcase himself for the huge contract in the offseason, while Sharks get some good prospects and nhl ready guy(bear) maybe gardiner also for 1 year no risk with a 1st and 2 2nd round picks to fast track a rebuild

That was my main idea that Patches and Meier would both be rentals this year(if Meier is traded ofc) for our best chance for a cup

He doesn’t have a say in what happens this year or really next year either. He’s an RFA. I can’t see why San Jose would take more cap back with the three defenseman going their way, all of which are 3 line defenseman. The prospects are okay, not high end but decent. Picks are all likely very late in rounds. Like others said, it’s absolutely a quantity trade.

Except there is a problem with your logic. Waddell has already stated that he, and I quote, “won’t Kucherov Patches.” So the likelihood that this kind of scenario plays out is unlikely, unless the Sharks are willing to eat half of Meier’s current deal, and that is still assuming that the Sharks would be willing to deal Meier. It makes sense for the Canes to go after him, but I doubt SJ considers if at the very least Necas isn’t involved.

Like that argument, as canes fan i have heard but i like to think that Waddell will say one thing to try and take advantage later on. He is a smart gm who is almost a wildcard imo

Id assume a player like Fast would be more beneficial than a Martinook or young prospects on top of the 2024 2nd rd pick

Canes would easily extend Meier. Perfect age even to give a 7 year deal to.

Quantity for quality in the sharks trade. Trading a recently signed UFA away which isn’t seen typically. “But Gunler and suzuki are good prospects” yea but not good enough to get meier+. If we want meier, morrow and drury is the start. Plus you’re giving up 3 Bottom pair/7th D men.

“But bear can play top line minutes and so can gardiner”
should they be playing top 4 minutes at all? Plus you’re adding in 3 picks which is something but clearly doesn’t make up for the rest of the fiasco.

I’ll put it to you like this. If the trade looks more like an video game trade an a real life trade, you messed up.

Too bad, the trade would never go through. Why worry about it when it’s not even plausible that meier joins the canes?

Living a simulation right now so life’s a video game lmaooo but if im being real thats a fair argument i still think SJ needs to somehow fast track their rebuild rather than trying to hang on for a chance to make the playoffs or just a middle of the pack team wether its a trade with Canes or another team willing to pay for him they need to do something sooner than later

If there were to be a realistic rebuild for San Jose, i would imagine meier is a coin flip on if he stays or goes for it. The canes have a super deep prospect pool, but it would likely mean that the canes would have to give up their best prospects to get meier. The canes have the quantity but not the quality. I would imagine a package for meier without Jarvis would look like

To CAR:
Meier

To SJS:
Necas
Morrow
2023 1st
2024 conditional 2nd that can turn into a first

And picks or something to even it out.
