Your profile says that you're an Avs fan, but that Toews trade is one of the worst suggestions for Colorado I've seen on CapFriendly, and I've been around for a while. I can't imagine Joe Sakic approving that trade if you took Toews out of it entirely. In fact, given that Hagelin is two weeks away from 34, Eller is 33 and Hathaway turns 31 at the beginning of the season, I can't see Chris MacFarland even entertaining ONE of the youngsters for that stew.

Lol

I will admit (as is obvious) that I'm not really sure what I'm doing. My thought process is:

1) Kadri gone, need someone at 2C
2) Having Girard or Manson as 5th D seems like a waste of cap space
3) Therefore, move a D-man to get a 2C

Who has a spare 2C, some cap issues, and want a good D?
I've looked at a few teams. This one explores Washington.

I know almost nothing about non-Avalanche players, so I'm just looking at contacts and points. Clearly there is more to determine player values.

I see Eller, a potential 2C who is only a few years older than Kadri and has decent enough numbers. Obviously not on Kadri's level, but he seems serviceable and half the cost of Kadri.

I understand Toews is valuable (more valuable than his cap) so I throw in a few spare parts that the Caps may want to move for space. I don't want Hagelin, I'm just grabbing him to move to fill the hole that Toews leaves.

Now I think, let me find a cheap 5th D, hence Kylington (who I feel Calgary may move because Weegar just fell out of the sky)

I don't disagree with you, I'm just an idiot. What am I missing?

The issue isn't the ages of the Washington players vs Kadri, it's their ages vs Toews.

Toews is a really good defenseman and was an essential element of their successful Stanley Cup win. Girard missed virtually the entire playoffs, so if anyone is expendable, it's him. You're thinking about using an extra d-man to replace a #2C isn't a bad idea on the surface, but Eller isn't the solution. You should be looking at someone under 30 who still has good years ahead of him -- someone like Phillip Danault, who isn't available, would be perfect. And Washington isn't the right place to look for a center because they're going to have to spend a large part of the season without Niklas Backstrom.

From what I've read, Colorado are willing to experiment with Rantanen and Newhook in that slot. But if they were looking around, I'd think that they would be talking to Florida, who have three quality centers on the roster (Barkov, Bennett and Reinhart) and are desperate to dump cap for futures.

Welcome to CapFriendly and good luck. Keep trying!
