Larkin

Created by: CEO
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 8, 2022
Published: Aug. 14, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Yzerman sees risk in keeping Larkin and him potentially walking, so he trades him before deadline.

Im thinking Mete earns an NHL job, so Toronto can afford to make this trade. They downgrade their 1st to a 2nd, send Niemela who's a defensive stud prospect, Voit, Brodie, Sandin, and Minten for Larkin, who is willing to re-sign.

This is thee rare ACGM where I think Toronto is overpaying. I wouldn’t move all this to get Larkin unless I was dumping Muzzin tbh. And if Toronto wanted to move Muzzin in the deal than Detroit would say no anyway.

Come on now you can't really think Detroit would actually trade Larkin for this? If you did think this was a legitimate package for Larkin you would've used Vancouver because you can put up a comparable for Vancouver without giving up anything you wouldn't want to lose. So you just wanted to piss people off is that it?

Would you trade Barzel for this?

Barzal still has one more year of control. And IK that he gets criticized for his two way game, but I’m not sure Tavares really found his two way game until his last year with the isles and then he went to Toronto.

Btw if I was gonna trade for a pending UFA center I’m fairly certain Larkin would be my top choice if I ran the isles. But I don’t c him leaving Detroit.

A) most think this is an overpayment for Larkin
B) what does Vancouver have to do with this? Yes they are my fav team, but I wouldn't want them to trade for Larkin since we aren't as good next year as the leafs.
C) I think your the only one who got passed off. Consider being on reddit instead

So you wouldn't take this trade? You move Larkin to left wing which is where he spent most of his time before Zetterburg retired. Then put him on Matthews's line which is were he played with USNDPT after Eichel left. Toronto really isn't giving up anything they can't afford to lose.

Larkin is not only a rental, but he’s also not as good as Barzal. It’s a weird comparison to make because Barzal has significantly more trade value.

A trade like this you'd have to assume that a contract extension would be in place and that the trade would be voided. Like the Tkachuk trade and if that is the case is it still an over payment?

Ok Barzel does have more trade value but it's a lot closer than you think. Can you tell me the last time a player like Larkin was traded and didn't extend with his new team who wasn't passed off at his current team? So realistically if a team were to trade for Larkin it's safe to say an extension would be in place.

First - a Massive overpay by leafs.
Second - why would wings want to trade their captain? They should be able to afford his extension…

If you'd floated this before Detroit spent ridiculously on Ben Legend, maybe a conversation could have started. Now, less than zero chance.

A pile of scraps for Larkin. Sandin we could just offer sheet if we wanted him. Brodie we definitely don't need if we are essentially rebooting the rebuild here and the rest is very meh. Detroit isn't going to lose Larkin. I can guarantee you that. He's a Michigan boy and captain of the team. They will get him signed.

Oh yes, I agree Larkin will likely be staying in Detroit. I’m just saying this package makes no sense for the leafs. They don’t need a forward at the expense of their best defensive defenseman.

I think we all agree the trade makes no sense (for either team), but a bunch of scraps. A young d (projected top 4), out top d prospect that just won best d @ world juniors, our 1st round pick from this year + 1st from next year + Brodie (who would be top pairing on your team)…come on. Again deal makes no sense, but Larkin ain’t worth half of this…

Exactly why this is a bad trade. If someone proposes a trade and they are comfortable with giving up the assets from their team's perspective, it is probably not a fair trade. When a trade is lopsided, it is usually due to a position of weakness, which Detroit is not really in a bad spot yet. Now if Larkin is not re-signing, there is still the hurdle of the NMC clause (or NTC, I forget). That means Larkin dictates where he accepts a trade to, and then the lopsided trade could happen.

In other words, Toronto is not giving up enough to acquire a two way top 6 center. Toronto is just giving up some lottery tickets in picks and prospects, a decent bottom 4 D in Sandin with some potential upside to be a top 4, and great defensive defenseman in Brodie that Detroit does not have a spot for in light of the Chariot and Maata signings.

Brodie being in the trade doesn't make sense for either team. Detroit isn't a playoff team yet maybe in 2023-24. Just being in the playoffs doesn't make you a contender so around 2 to 4 more seasons for the team to solidify and fine tune the roster. So a 32yr old dman doesn't make a lot of sense. With Toronto already being a contender it makes little sense to trade him. Plus there is no way he waives for Detroit. I also think in the next couple of seasons Liljegren will emerge as Toronto's best offensive dman.

I don't think Toronto should be young dmen at all with the majority of their being 30 or older and then Rielly is 28. Yes Brodie would be in our top pair but he is 32 so how much value does he really have from Detroit's POV? Sandin has considerably less value than he had a couple of seasons ago. Voit looks like the 2nd coming of Jeremy Bracco who a bunch of Leaf's fans here were sure he was worth a 1st or at very least a 2nd. Minten is too far off to really say but if I had to say right now I'd say he's a middle 6 forward. I do like Niemelä quite a bit and he is by far the best piece coming to Detroit in this trade but with him and late 1st being the only pieces of significant value to Detroit I don't see how you can say Larkin isn't half of that.

laugh You think a bunch of scraps is massive overpay for Larkin, None of those pieces Detroit needs. No way Yzerman deals Larkin for scraps.

laugh Larkin isn't worth half of this, Considering that half of the package is pure garbage i agree. And the rest Detroit doesn't need. Brodie, Niemela, Sandin isn't better than what we've in our pipeline. The rest is pure trash.
