Oettinger and Dallas apparently do not see eye to eye on a deal. Vegas threatens to use their cap space (from Lehner+Patrick+Weber going on LTIR) to sign Oettinger to an inflated 1 year contract. This doesn't work for either side. Dallas gets a worse return, and Vegas has to overpay Oettinger in cap. Vegas would prefer to give up more picks and assets to get Oettinger on a better contract. Dallas would prefer to get a better return. Is this a good return for Oettinger?

Vegas gives up two 1sts, a 2nd, a 3rd, and a young top 4 defenseman in Hague, who will likely sign in the 3.XX x 3 range in exchange for Oettinger. A 1 year 6.2M offer sheet would be costly for Dallas to match, as they would have to give up some major assets to move out contracts to one of the few teams with cap space, or give up a good player for a minimal return. That offer sheet would be doable by Vegas, and would only cost a 1st+3rd.

The moving parts in the trade are a swap of Brossoit and Khudobin. Dallas prefers Brossoit, Khudobin is expected to return in time for training camp. Dallas retains on Khudobin to make it cap in/cap out. Vegas buries Khudobin.

Hakanpaa goes to Vegas to balance out roster needs and move some cap out for Dallas. He is a big bottom pairing D who only makes 1.5M.

An alternative if Vegas is not giving up enough value (in the context of extorting Dallas with an offer sheet threat), would be adding Logan Thompson to the trade and removing the Broissoit/Khudobin swap.

Stars arnt trading Jake. They dont see eye to eye at the moment but will agree on $ before the season starts
They arnt far off. His agent needs to take a step back from the calgary series and realize you dont overpay based on just 1 playoff series. Had a good season, but there no need to overpay now unless someone wants to over pay on an offer sheet.

Lets say this deal were to go through.
Whats the length and $ you’re giving Jake?

Stars decline the trade and force Vegas to send an offer sheet that they then match.

Dallas isn't trading a 23-year old goalie of his caliber. Oettinger's camp currently has very little leverage in contract negotiations. They have no arbitration rights and Dallas owns his RFA rights. If he doesn't play in Dallas, he doesn't play this season. Will Nill budge on the salary to get a deal done? Probably at some point, but he's shown before that he has no issues dragging these things well into August and into training camp.

The only realistic offer sheet Vegas could offer would max out Oettinger's contract at $6.3M. Pricy? Yes. Do the Stars match? Absolutely. The only offer sheet that would give Dallas pause would be the $10M+ offer sheet that would give Dallas four 1st Round Picks & let's be honest...Vegas isn't going to offer that.
