Damon Severson Trades Explanation

Created by: Devil
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 15, 2022
Published: Aug. 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the acquisition of John Marino and selection of Simon Nemec, Damon Severson mock trades have been popping up recently. It doesn't look like the Devils will keep Severson long term due to their loaded young RD pipeline. However, many of the Severson trades I've seen don't make too much sense with the Devils position. Im going to explain why Severson is a good trade target for teams and what the Devils would be looking for depending on their position at the deadline
Trades
1.
NJD
Severson is a 28 year old defensemen who played 24 minutes a night this year with no major injury concerns (played 98% of games in the past 5 years). Severson had his best offensive season yet with 46 points with solid defensive metrics (see chart below). He could be a top pairing dman for some teams but is best suited for 2nd pair role with special team minutes. He's not too old and his next contract projections aren't outrageous for a RD (around 6x6)

Now going on to the trade scenarios, I have chosen the three teams I've seen the most Severson trades to.
    TOR
    2.
    NJD
If the Devils are competitive at the deadline (Top 3 in division)

If the Devils are firmly in a playoff spot at the deadline, Severson is a keeper. It wouldn't be smart for the Devils to add by subtracting if they are contending. Instead, use picks (2023 first, 2023 second) or prospects (Stillman, Foote, Bahl) to acquire players
      EDM
        No trade
        3.
        NJD
        1. Garland, Conor
        Additional Details:
        Hockey trade (anywhere during season)

GM Tom Fitzgerald has said multiple times through interviews that he is looking for "hockey trades" (for example Haula/Zacha. Marino/Smith). If the Devils feel like they need more scoring offensively or if Nemec is ready, Severson trade could happen sooner than later. The most common Severson hockey trade I've seen is Garland for Severson (extended) 1 for 1 which seems to work with both fanbases. Other hockey trades include Boeser, Nylander, Meier but Devils would have to ADD accordingly. And with a hypotheical hockey trade, Severson would return with an extension to make it more logical for opposing teams.
        4.
        NJD
        1. 2023 1st round pick (WPG)
        Additional Details:
If the Devils are sellers at the deadline

If the Devils are out of a playoff spot at the deadline and the team the are trading to is in a playoff spot, the Devils would be looking to sell Severson for prospects and picks (just using Jets as an example). If we look at previous TDL/midseason deals involving dman

        Muzzin for 1st + 2 prospects
        Montour for 1st + prospect
        Savard for 1st + 3rd
        Chiarot for 1st + 4th + prospect
        Lindholm for 1st + 2 2nds + prospect + cap dump

If that's the market, Severson should easily command a 1st + prospect from teams and even more if it comes with an extension

Severson is nice but we just signed Garland last year and he has been a great addition for us. There isn't that good of a reason to trade a 50 Point 25 year old with a Sweetheart of a deal worth 4 years for a 28 year old with a year left on his deal who has started putting up more points only this season. We are probably going to trade JT Miller who also has a 1 year remaining and yes he is 29 but, he has been a consistent 70+ ppg player for a few seasons now where as Severson only broke out this season. Yes, JT Miller put up 99 points and you could say that is a breakout however, we have seen glimpses and flashes of this skill level when he first came to Vancouver in 2019-2020 and put up 72 points and after that in the 2020-2021 he put up 46 points in 50 something games on an unhealthy bottom of the pack canucks team during covid. Miller probably will be traded so keeping garland would be more wise because he is younger, has more time left on his deal, has been great for Vancouver and consistent the past few seasons on a bad arizona team. So inconclusion, keeping Garland helps the team grow and keep the core together.

I know it sucks when other teams randomly start declining trade offers out of nowhere that used to be okay.

Anyways, thats all I have to say.

If Severson wants to sign for 6 mil I'd trade Garland for him in a heartbeat. The only reason he is even available is the Devils are maybe the only team with too many RD. There really are no other options for the Canucks to improve their right side. Players like Garland can be found fairly easily.

Good write up, I think it captures the Severson landscape well.
The ideal course of action for me would be the hockey trade with a player under team control coming back to the Devils.

I think the appeal for Vancouver should be improving on what’s on of the worst RHD corps in the league.
The marginal gains of adding Severson to address their biggest weakness should be a lot greater than the loss of Garland.

Devil fans are interesting. Most seem to think Severson is worth a grade A high end package like Nylander in a 1 for 1 but at the same time are happy with Garland. Just take Kerfoot and a 2nd that's easily a better deal. You easily could sign him to a less than 5 million dollar contract and have another asset as well. Garland is so so overrated on here.

No one has said Willie 4 Severson, one for one
We have a bunch of Kerfoots so as was noted it's a bigger ask with adds from us. Fitz has done pretty well to date. I'm looking at a Meier trade with mire stuff from us mid to late in the season IF we trade him at all

The difference between Kerfoot and Garland is their jersey and 1.5 million more dollars going to Garland.

          Here is my thinking:

The Devils have organizational depth everywhere. Moving Severson for a forward makes no sense at all (Holtz and Foote will be sent down and Zetterlund is scratched!).

On the defensive end, flipping hom for a LD makes a level of sense, but I see that ad taking form Peter to feed Paul, and I think there is an argument that Bahl makes the team, with Oktohiuk in the system.

Even in net, Daws looks like he could be something.

The Devils have flat out done such a fabulous job drafting over the last few years, Severson could be moved for picks, and should be. I just don't see a move making any sense involving a player right now, unless someone seriously overpays and Fitz just can't say no.

          Who are “most” Devils fans?
Kerfoot was drafted by the Devils and refused to sign with them. Why would the Devils go after him and why would Kerfoot sign with a team he already refused to sign with

I tend to agree, wait for the deadline when his value is at the highest being the best defender available and sell him. I’ve been saying it all off-season. Severson will bring in a HAUL. rhd, top minute muncher, fantastic, contract even cap strapped teams could afford with retention. He is going to get at LEAST a 1st and a blue chip prospect at the deadline barring he doesn’t get injured before then. And to be honest Garland doesn’t do much for me. Sure he works hard and so competitive but our forward group is already small, and like you mentioned we have wingers that could and should be able to join the top 6

Not sure if he gets a 1st and a bluechip/grade A prospect at the deadline without a sign and trade in place, only because the market for RD right now is really soft.

          A 1st, definitely. A bluechip prospect and a 2nd-3rd? Definitely.

Do you need a player to replace Severson in the lineup at the TDL? No. If Fitz makes this move, the Devils are out. Walsh gets the call.

I would have to think any team looking at Severson at the dealine would be looking to extend, so to maximize value, the sign and trade is 100% the route to go.

That was years ago, who knows why he refused in the past. Maybe he wanted to finish school and they didn't care to let him. I don't know the details or care. My point though is Garland is massively overrated.

That was years ago, who knows why he refused in the past. Maybe he wanted to finish school and they didn't care to let him. I don't know the details or care. My point though is Garland is massively overrated.

Kerfoot said it was because of the center depth of the Devils (Hischier, Henrique, Zajac at that time). With more center depth and more winger depth, no reason he would want to come back. Devils tried to sign him but he didn’t want to.

And what about “most devils fans say Nylander for Severson 1 for 1”

I like that idea as well. Not sure which young LD are available. I saw a couple of Sandin for Severson trades earlier in the offseason but I doubt Leafs can afford him.

I have seen that so much on here. Usually those fans back down a little and say, "well if we add a 2nd its likely an overpay but fine". It's ridiculous. A 2nd pair defender isn't worth half as much as you guys hope. But still you can do better than Garland.

I don't think Severson is what TO needs anyways. He's similar to Brodie but sort of the opposite. Brodie is better defensively than offensively but decent at both, while Severson is better offensively than defensively. However, TO has that already with Rielly so where would he even fit? Personally, I don't see any need for TO to acquire Severson. I would rather get a Bogosian type to be a 3rd pair/PK guy who can play every once and a while.

The difference between Kerfoot and Garland is their jersey and 1.5 million more dollars going to Garland.

          And division they play in.
I'd rather plg him for more if we're moving him

I agree with BigShoots here. Severson is more of a priority than Garland, even if Miller is traded. I would rather have a guy like Hoglander/Podkozlkin get top 6 minutes over Poolman/Myers getting top pair minutes
