Additional Details:
Jets are getting our best prospect a 2023 first (yep it’s late but deal with it) plus Dube and Valimaki who can step in and play right away.

  1. Coronato, Matthew [Reserve List]
  2. Dubé, Dillon
  3. Välimäki, Juuso
  4. 2023 1st round pick (CGY)

CGY
  1. Eller, Lars
  2. Leason, Brett
  3. Mantha, Anthony ($1,700,000 retained)
  4. 2023 4th round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
Taking Eller back with Monahan retained makes that part of the trade a nearly even cap hit on expiring contracts.

Getting Hanafin and trading out Mantha with that retention means the Caps are only adding 950,000 to their cap to get a LHD that is a huge upgrade and way better than Mantha. To help us they’re going to have to give back a prospect that’s NHL ready and Leason fits that definition perfectly. It’s not McMichael, or Alexeyev, or Chesley, which makes it more than fair.
WSH
  1. Hanifin, Noah
  2. Monahan, Sean ($3,000,000 retained)

I hate Scheifflele and Coronato will be NHL ready in March.

Lucic was paid his signing bonus ($3M) on July 1 and only has $850,000 left to be paid, so he could go to a team looking to get to the cap floor for next to nothing since he counts $7M against the cap but that team would only have to pay him $850k.

I'm an outsider, but it seems to me that trading futures for Scheifele is a bad strategic plan. Consider the 2024-2025 roster:

Of the forwards shown, only 4 (Huberdeau, Mangiapane, Coleman and Pelletier) plus the scratched Brett Leason are guaranteed to be under contract, plus 1 of the defensemen (Andersson), unless you can re-sign Weegar, plus the goalies. Meanwhile, you've traded away Coronato, Dube and Valimaki, all of whom will probably play significant roles for the Flames if left there, and the 2023 first, and you didn't have a 2022 first, so other than Zary, Kuznetsov and Poirier, it's hard to see who will be coming up through the system. This looks to me like a looming collapse in 2024-2025 and a top-5 pick that June.

That ship has sailed my friend as every team in the league is over the cap floor. The only reason ANA, ARI, BUF, etc take a cap dump now is they get paid to do so. Or they actually want the player on their roster, which is possible. Lucic in ANA would be a decent fit and a 2nd would be enticing to take him on. For anything less though? Calgary can keep him and ANA will run what they have.

The Jets wouldn't consider a winger prospect, a bottom pairing LD, a bottom 6 winger and a mid first a fair trade for a PPG 1C on a great contract. Just not enough quality.

You blithely dismiss USA U-20/WJC standout Matthew Coronato as "a winger prospect," as if Winnipeg has anyone in the system rated as highly. Who would that be? It wouldn't be Cole Perfetti, who's the center prospect Winnipeg hopes will replace Scheifele, and it wouldn't be Chaz Lucius, who was drafted after Coronato and not selected to the WJC team this summer. So tell me why Coronato wouldn't be the #1 winger prospect in the Jets system.

I agree with you but Lucius is injured and that’s why he’s not on the team. He was on the team in the winter. However I agree with you the jets should accept this Tess’s if they were looking at moving Scheifele

To be fair, both Perfetti and Lucius weren’t released to play in the juniors and to use that to base potential is a poor strategy.
That said, Coronato would be great but the Jets primary needs are C and RHD.

I get where the Caps trade is coming from but right now they need a top 6 winger more than they need a top 4 defenseman and I'm not convinced the gap between Eller and Monahan exists at all. Hanifin was great last year but was pretty average the 3 years before that and Mantha's year was nowhere close to as bad as people think. The retention on Mantha's deal also completely screws them next year. Leason and a 4th though is basically nothing, so not crazy

The Caps trade is an interesting one, but I don’t think Washington would accept this. The value seems alright, but I can’t see Washington springing for this unless they are sure Orlov won’t re-sign. With the Left side already holding Fehervary, Orlov, Johansen, and Alexeyev on the way, I’m not sure Washington would commit to forcing Fehervary to the 3rd pairing for 2 years.

I don't hate the caps trade, but as others have said, the retention screws us for next year when we have tons of contracts coming off the books and we have a plethora of LHD on the NHL roster and in the system. Value wise, I think the trade is very close. Probably just take out all retention and it's a workable deal, but we'd have to make another move too and I'm not sure there's one that makes sense.

Who cares if he would or wouldn't be the Jets best winger prospect? I said he is a winger prospect and as good as he is he isn't a need if the Jets are trading a 1C. Wingers are far easier to find than PPG 1C's.

Then you add that the two other players are low value, unneeded, bottom of the lineup players to go with a mid first and it adds up to not enough value or needs met to entertain. Especially in conference.

Please tell me what you think Scheifele will fetch in a trade that’s probably a year away? Because I’d place a bet his return is similar to above or worse

Value wise it would probably be that, but with more needs being meet for the Jets. It's not a video game, needs matter more than perceived value.

You're also talking about a year from now which is a huge difference in value from making the trade this summer.

And why don’t the Jets need a winger? Lucius is a centre and Perfetti looks like he could be a centre as well.

They don't need a winger at the cost of a PPG 1C on a great contract. Wingers are infinitely easier to find that a PPG 1C. Coronato would be great, just not at the cost of Scheifele.
