Pruning the Branches

Created by: EmilieCastonguay
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 17, 2022
Published: Aug. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1.) NJD is done with lottery luck:

Thought about similar trades I have seen on the boards with a 1:1 Severson for Garland trade.

With VAN looking to potentially move on from Tyler Myers before the advent of the '23-24 season, wanted to experiment with OEL moving to the right-side, so the offer is futures focused. NJD still has Hamilton and Marino on the RS and expect Nemec to be there for '23-24 (if not sooner). Mukhamadullin is expendable. The value in Garland's deal (term/money) and his flexibility to support multiple line up combinations justify the prospect and '23 1st round pick ask.

2.) COL swaps one pending JT UFA for another JT UFA (but upgraded):

VAN retains $1.5M in salary to balance things out for COL, who get a better offensive player to take the place of Kadri. VAN gets grit and speed, along with some scoring touch in Compher as a natural 3C to allow Horvat to move away from the matchup role and focus on securing better offensive opportunities (Let me state the obvious; Bo is not a defensive wizard - he is a big-bodied, one-shot scorer who can drive the net). This move pushes Dickinson to a 4L winger role where he is better suited. VAN gets a prospect defenseman and a 1st round pick (which will be much closer to a 2nd round pick after all is said and done).

3.) DiPietro needs a new home:

VAN includes the '23 NYR 4th as a sweetener in a deal with OTT. VAN gets future picks in the '23 5th and 7th rounds. Fair value.

At end of day, VAN gets younger, faster, grittier. There is still question marks on the back-end, but this team should be competitive, especially with the UFA signing of De Haan. This allows Rathbone to take 3rd pair minutes, alongside a platoon of Schenn/Dermott/Poolman (if healthy).

Devils do not have the cap room for that move.

I can't control Tom Fitzgerald. Maybe he gets something else for Severson that is cheaper.

It's literally your trade proposal. Devils decline, they don't have the cap room.

K. In advance of the VAN/NJD deal, Tom Fitzgerald trades Damon Severson to WPG for a vintage issue of InGoal Magazine (FEATURING MARTIN BRODEUR!), their '23 1st and 3rd

This makes no sense. Devils wouldn't do both of these deals unless it was one three way deal and the Devils keep their own picks.

Way too much for Jersey to give up for Garland....and still miss the playoffs.
