32 in 32 lineups - Colorado Avalanche

Created by: zk97
Team: 2022-23 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 17, 2022
Published: Aug. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With Nazem Kadri likely headed to the New York Islanders as it stands, the reigning cup champs seem to be ready to start the season with the roster they currently have, but they may sign a depth forward or two to fill the 13th (and 14th) forward spot. With Kadri gone, it's looking like centre Alex Newhook will be taking the spot at 2C, and if he proves to be unable to take it, Mikko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog, or JT Compher may have to take the spot.

I think they will add one more decent piece with that extra cap space instead of using it on bottom tier depth guys and leaving some unused. They can add a 2.5M contract and accrue enough cap space by the deadline to add a 5.5M+ AAV contract if they use a 22 man roster up until that point

Stastny, Rask, Rodrigues, and Milano are the 4 that I think make sense. Thats the order of priority id go in too

forgot about stastny, he would be a good choice to sign
rask probably shouldnt get 2.5 considering he went to the AHL but he could be a decent depth guy i guess

there were some rumblings that Stastny and the Avs already have a handshake deal in place
You are overlooking Ben Meyers on the roster, slot in on the Avs third line next year.

Only issue with Stastny is if theres any bad blood between him and the Avs based on how he left them years ago. If everyone is over that then I think hes a perfect fit

Rask had very solid underlying numbers the past 2 seasons, especially defensively - that seems like the kind of forward the Avs like. Youre probably right he wouldnt cost 2.5M so if they can get him cheaper then thats even better

I dont think there would be any bad blood there. Stastny walked on Greg Sherman as the GM, Sakic didnt take over September of 2014. Stastny signed in St Louis July of 2014. Now its Chris MacFarland's show.

Stastny didnt have any beef with the core guys, just was business of playing back home in St Louis

Sakic had control since 2013, no? Maybe it wasnt official but I thought he was the one pulling the strings before he was actually named GM. Either way its in the past now - I agree I dont think Stastny or the Avs would have any issues with a reunion at this point

officially he wasnt named GM until September 2014, Roy was also the VP of Hockey Ops at that time, coming on board in 2013. He was acting as a partial GM as well while Sherman was basically just managing the Cap. "TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that Roy would have the final say in all hockey matters. Then-Avalanche General Manager Greg Sherman retained his post, but was considered the general manager "in name only"

man looking back to that, what a messy situation in that front office, no wonder it didnt work.

meyers is interesting, didnt know how good he was in the regular season. probably takes cogliano's spot on the third, who gets moved to the fourth and probably one of maltsev or galch (on this roster at least) gets scratched

so if the avs add stastny for 2.5 and rask for, say, 1.25, it should fit in cap wise if you remove galchenyuk and pitlick from the roster, and then you have a roster of:

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Lehkonen - Stastny - Nichushkin
Meyers - Newhook - Compher
Cogliano - Rask - Helm
(Sedlak, Maltsev)

defense same, goalie same

i'd say thats solid if stastny performs like a 2C, and its even better if newhook does too. honestly this is a scary good COL team

meyers was the prized college free agent available last year, he only got 5 games but he looked like an NHLer. They dont get that guy signed by saying hes going to be in the AHL.
Cogliano Helm O'Connor 4th line was a buzz saw in the playoffs, they are going to roll those guys back out again.
