If by 'they miss again' you mean 2022-23 Varlamov is an ufa. And there is nothing in that trade that gets Vegas the Islanders 1st and 2nd rd picks.

Canucks need a RD badly. Theodore is top 20 in the league and signed for 3 seasons. It is a steep price, let me know if you have a better offer a from Vancouver standpoint.

We aren’t in a position to be giving up 2 first round picks and a young top 9 winger

This would be at the deadline or mid 22-23, Varlamov trade is necessary for the Isles' cap situation. Smith would be the best winger on NYI, and he has term on his deal. I think 1st and 2nd is a reasonable price if the Islanders want to make the playoffs.

I'm not sure the last time a player move recieved two firsts back. If Vegas isn't winning that likely means Theodore's value will be down. On top of that, the flat cap world has shown talented players can be had for a lot less as well.

I think his value on the market is much less than that despite having term. Canucks rarely play oppo hand D and have cap troubles themselves. It would take more money going back and the 2023 first would be a hard no. If they were very keen on Shea, they'd probably be offering a conditional first, Myers expiring deal and prospect like Hog. They've already shown to be very firm in negotiating with their own with JT, they wouldn't change that up and offer a lottery ticket for Shea.

In what world are Smith and Brossoit fetching that extravagant return? You need to reel that waaaaaaay in.

The return is mainly due to Smith's term. If teams are willing to pay a first for half a year of a 40 pt player, they should be willing to pay a 1st and 2nd for 2 1/2 years of a 50 pt player

Good memory. Cap was the boon there. Canucks don't have the luxury to give up those picks and be a SCF contender.

I’d rather have Varly’s expiring deal than Smith tbh.

This is a massive overpay for a guy in his thirties who Vegas shouldn’t have resigned.

I have no idea who you're referring to with the 40 points business, but even if that was the case your math is still way off. Brossoit is a dump and that costs. You somehow have him returning a better goalie+.

Copp (51 pt pace, rental) : 1st + 2nd + prospect
Lehkonen (41 pt pace, pending RFA) : 1st rd prospect + 2nd
H Lindholm (30 pt pace, rental) : 1st + 2nd + 2nd

All notable trades from last year's deadline, where a player less valuable than Smith returned more.

Smith's situation is actually very similar to Toffoli last year, except Smith is older. 2 1/2 years left, 55 pt pace. Toffoli returned a 1st, 2nd rd prospect, 5th, and 4th liner.

Exactly none of those players has less value than Smith. And you completely ignored my Brossoit point.
