Small Trade and Signing

Description
The benefit for Buffalo is that they can balance their left-right pairings and not play Dahlin on his off-hand. If Gardiner is truly healthy, no need to do this trade, however.

Sabres prefer Bryson. RHD will need to be a bigger upgrade to slot in with Power.

Sometimes net neutral trades aren't a bad idea. Finding a big RH upgrade is difficult to do this late in the offseason. I do think that the Sabres may be the favorite for Severson in UFA next offseason, however, considering that Marino was essentially acquired by the Devils to be his successor.

Just the way Kevyn Adams operates. This trade opens a weakness at 3LHD with Ryan Johnson not signing yet and Bear isn't much of an upgrade over Lyubushkin. I argue he is a downgrade.

I don't think Samuelsson as a 3LHD is a weakness. The whole idea of the trade is to shift Dahlin back to the left. Look at the pairings that I wrote above.

We wouldn't play Samuelsson on the third pair. He's arguably our 2nd most effective defenseman. They still have to shelter Power until he's fully ready.

Samuelsson - Dahlin
Power - Jokiharju
Lyubushkin - Bear
Pilut

it just doesn't work.

Or, move Power to the third pair to shelter him. The whole idea of my proposed trade was to make sure that Dahlin continued to develop on his natural side.

Dahlin-Jokiharju is a terrible pair. They don't work together which is why they moved Dahlin to the right to play with Samuelsson.

I like the Power-Lyubushkin pairing but that's about it. Samuelsson and Bear don't complement.

You've got clague and pilut too, not much to get excited about though. See how this year goes, maybe there's a move from to get a second pair rhd.

Yeah that's what I see Adams doing. You add a legit top 4 RHD and this defense is deep if Ryan Johnson signs for 2023-24. Almost an impeccable defense.

Samuelsson - Dahlin
Power - ???
Johnson - Jokiharju
Pilut

Dahlin-Jokiharju is a terrible pair...
Let me start with, Buffalo has missed the playoffs 11 straight years.
All four of the cup finalists played with 3 RHD and 3LHD.
Tampa was so committed to playing with 3 RHD they used Rutta and Bogosian, who were put on waivers by Chicago and Buffalo respectively.
How bad is a player who is put on waivers by Chicago or Buffalo?
Bear would appear to be an All Star compared to Jan and Zach.
The coaches play 3 RHD even if they are as bad as Jan and Zach because they know a LHD playing on the right side has to back hand the puck to clear the zone, this is not a good option.
I really do not know who is better Ethan or Jacob, most likely about equal with a nod to Ethan.
Buffalo has five potential LHD and two RHD (I do not see Fitzgerald in too many line ups).
Bear is only 5 months older than Bryson yet has played in 79 more games with 11 more goals and 28 more pts.
Bear has played 3rd line minutes behind Barrie and Larsson in Edmonton and Pesce and DeAngelo, I am not surprised that he would be on the third pairing on either of those teams.
I will let Granato make the pairings as he certainly knows more about building a team than and Buffalo coach not named John or Scotty.

I make this trade and give Waddell a great big thank you for balancing my defense.

Playing Dahlin on his off hand is a benefit. The trade is fine though
