Miller

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 20, 2022
Published: Aug. 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Miller can be slotted anywhere in the top 9. Don't yell at me for having him as number 3C here. He would still be playing 18-20 mins a game regardless where he is slotted. He could easily be #1 or #2 left wing as well or #2C. Options are good.

Hirvonen and Niemela are both having great WJC right now as well.

I assume this is too much to give up from the Leafs side of things. What if there is an extension in place? 7.5 x 7 or so. They would then have some cap moves to make next off season, but it could be worth it!
Thoughts?

Obviously I want to yell at you for putting Miller in 3C but you told me I can't so I won't.

I like the trade. Top prospect, 1st round pick (though I believe it should be unprotected but whatever), another quality prospect and a couple position / cap exchanges.

My only concern is Sandin signing for only 1.25M. Don't you think it would have already been a done-deal if he was willing to sign for that much?

Either way the Leafs are fine since you can slot Muzzin on the left with Schenn on the right and sign / bring up a depth guy.

quick side note:
Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Miller - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Jarnkrok
Robertson - Gaudette - Aube-Kubel

Right?

Thanks for being the first person to ever read one of my descriptions. You the real MVP <3

I think 2 years 1.4m is fair for Sandin. Same as Lily. He wants more cap. So I can see a 3 year x 2m happening. But in this AGM I did a one year contract (which would be lower cap than 2 year, since you project a young player like that to get better every year). So I fell on 1.25m for 1 year. basically the team and the player can't agree on anything and they settle for a 1 year, show me type of contract. I tend to be off on a lot of my RFA signings though. I find them hard to predict.

As for your lines - I can definitely see those being the case. The only change is that I would be SHOCKED if Gaudette beats out all the other candidates for that 4th line centre spot. Steeves, McMann, Malgin will all be in the mix. I also think Joey Anderson will have a legit shot at making the team this year as well (although he is a winger). Time will tell though.

I could also see the Leafs signing a guy like Stepan for that 4th line centre role.

We will see!

I think Sandin's biggest issue is diminished role - bringing in Schenn and sending out Holl largely doesn't change much of that, other than Schenn makes half what Holl makes.

Sandin wants regular 3rd pairing with sniffs of second pairing. As currently constructed, he has Giordano, Muzzin and Rielly ahead of him on the left and Brodie, Holl, Liljegren on the right. Moving out Holl bumps him up one spot and keeping Schenn as your #7 is functional.

I think this is a Miller trade that gets done, but man is it ever expensive.

VAN would want Liljegren as the main piece. Miller is looking at 8-8.5 mill per on a 7+ year deal. VAN only moves Schenn if they can get a RHD who can play now with Hughes.

I disagree. If Toronto calls Vancouver and offers this I think you have to accept. It’s also unlikely, but they could see how Holl does with Hughes. He sounds like a pure defence defenceman which could work as a short term solution

Fair enough. But I disagree.

My thought process is Liljegren probably isn’t the right piece to play with Hughes and I think Niemela will be better. I understand why you would disagree though

Niemela 5'11-170 pounds? vs Liljegren 6'1- 192 pounds. I would much rather have Liljegren playing with Hughes. Don't think VAN wants to wait around either, they probably see there window to compete is while they have Demko under contract.

This is pretty good for Miller though the only reason this trade might not go through is cap space depending on if Poolman goes on LTIR

I think Kane would be a better target for the leafs if they were willing to trade this package or a package like this.
