Miller to Islanders

Description
The odds of Canucks giving JT Miller the contract he's looking for are pretty slim and I don't think they want this distraction going into the season. Lamariello having done nothing this offseason has himself on the hot seat to make a move. With Dobson, Romanov, and Bellows still needing contracts they don't exactly have the space to take on a contract like Miller without shedding salary in the deal. Unless they feel like they can move a player like Josh Bailey which at market value would cost them a 1st going back alongside Bailey. The below deal actually saves them 350k in space while acquiring Miller which is basically best case scenario for the Isles. Although in order to make this deal make sense for both sides and in Vancouver's case they would need to replace Miller's production someway and Beauvillier makes the most sense as he has been on the trade block before and fits Van's age range compared to a player like Bailey. Vancouver also has a hole on the right side of their back end and with Tucker Poolman's health concerns there is a good chance he starts the year on LTIR. That leads me to introducing journeyman Scott Mayfield as a perfect partner for Quinn Hughes. Free-agent after the year and likely heading elsewhere anyways. Of course when you get rid of someone like Miller that requires more than just two players like Beauvillier and Mayfield. I chose William Dufour as I believe he suits what the Canucks are looking for in a player and potentially a Boeser replacement down the road. I also think they prefer and value Raty way higher due to his past season plus position flexibility. Isles fans might not like giving up Dufour but gotta give to get because they are running out of time with this current core. With Poolman possibly going on LTIR to start the year and the Canucks "reported" interest in Eduardo Rodrigues, I signed Rodrigues to a 1x2.5 using Namestnikov signing in Tampa at the same price as a comparable. However if Poolman did start the season with the team you could start Dickinson as 3C which is not something I'm a huge fan of but a scenario that must be told for all of this to make sense.

This is possibly the deepest forward group the Canucks have had in a long time with a defense that brings some questions but not as bad as some may think. A typical Jim Rutherford team that is built to outscore you with a defense you can get by with. This trade also allows them to stay competitive while having an eye on the future, which seems to be the narrative the current management group supports.

As for the Islanders, if you aren't willing to pay the price for an elite forward then you might as well just run it back with the same core and hope that last year was a fluke.

Side note: my projections for current Islanders RFA's are...

Dobson: 6.75M x 3
Romanov: 2.5M x 2
Bellows: 900k x 1

Pull out Dufour and add Schenn we have a deal. Isles fans will tell you that's too much. Canucks fans will tell you it's not the right pieces. But really that's about what the isles can/should offer

I liked Dufour’s play for team Canada. If he can play with top of the line up prospects like McTavish and Grieg them that says a lot about his future. I have no interest in moving him for Miller and it’s not like Hogslander has proven much at the NHL level.

If you think Beauvillier, Mayfield, and a First gets Miller, Hoglander, and Schenn, I have a bridge to sell you

And dufour* - let’s not act like schenn has much value. He’s a 6D at best

Beauvillier at that contract barely has much value either. Mayfield for Schenn is obviously an upgrade. Dufour makes it closer and so does the first but I can’t see Vancouver doing that. I think Dufour and a First for Miller is around fair (I’d rather not do it as a Canucks fan but who knows) but I’m not giving up Hoglander and Schenn for Mayfield and Beauvillier

Beauvillier was a high end 2nd liner for 3 straight seasons before having a career worst season shooting a career low. He’s worth more to the isles than he is in a trade because scoring wingers aren’t worth much in the trade market.

The only way the OP original post makes sense is if you switch Beauvillier with Bailey

Lol. Bailey is a cap dump that requires at least a first to move. Mayfield and Dufour are not worth Miller

Then it doesn’t make sense for the isles. Vancouver can trade him somewhere else or risk keeping him on the team next season.

Replace Dufour with Simon Holmstrom or Ruslan Iskhakov, and add Schenn or Poolman, and Isles say yes.
