Mikheyev is an awful signature for canucks

Created by: Taz
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 16, 2022
Published: Aug. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Mikheyev is a 3rd liner, plays on PK. His best season is 34pts (he did play only 53 games) but still he is a very unproven player offensively, other than last years he never passed 25pts.

I'd say Mikheyev is like a Tanner Pearson 2.0 but more expensive.

Canucks already have good forward depht, with Kuzmenko, Hoglander and Podkolzin all having better offensive ceiling than Mikheyev, there isnt much room for him, especially with that contract!

Now canucks are in cap hell, with no better defense, but they got an overpaid 3rd line winger thats not any better than Pearson who will likely be pushed on the 4th line because of this signature.

I wouldn't say he's awful, just slightly overpaid. He's definitely a better defensive and utility player than Pearson, but they are fairly equal offensively.

I didn't said the player is awful. I said that it's an awful signature for the team.

? He was on pace for 32 goals last year. Yes he didn’t get many assists but he was in a third line role. Most analytics have him as an option for a good top 6 player, and without him they don’t get Kuzmenko. The teams PK was awful and he’s an incredible penalty kill option. He adds more speed to the lineup which is something management wants and he can be a mentor for Podkolzin. The signing is fine

I like Mikheyev. But his contract is too high and for too much term. At his best yep he's a 5m player. But his productivity has big lulls and he's often a 2m guy. We'll see if can maintain his high paced game as he showed last year. But I wish Mik and the Canucks the best of luck. Hope they made a good signing.

Most analytics love his defensive play but are not confident in his ability to replicate his offensive numbers mostly because he jumped from 7% shooting to 14% yoy.

That said, he wasn't brought in to be an offensive star, if it works out that way, great, but he was brought in to help the PK and forecheck. He's essentially a premier Motte and they paid the price for him.

While I would of rather see them improve the defense with that money, they also needed to improve the PK and spped element of this roster too.

Mikheyev is a premium middle six, PK specialist. Since he's coming in as a ufa he's going to be "overpaid" but he's the type of player that is already getting paid more than his pking counterparts due to his speed and goal scoring upside. The hope of course is that he builds off last year, but if he's getting 20-25 goals, with 40 or so (or even only 30) points plus killing penalties, then he would doing what he got paid to do.

If he gets 30 goals and 50+ points, that would be great but that's not what is expected of him probably.

I don’t expect him to have 30 goals, but if he can score 20-25 while being a threat on the PK I’m fine with the signing

I mean I've watched a lot of him over the past few years as a Leaf and I remember saying that if he could convert on 1 or 2 out of 10 scoring chances he'll be a top 6 threat. While I agree that the cap hit and term is a bit high without having consistently delivered, the amount of chances he creates with his speed has always been there. So if he's finally figured out how to finish I think he has a good chance at helping the Canucks offence and will no doubt improve their PK.

I think 15-20 is more likely but it depends where he plays. I suspect he and Hirvat will play a lot at 5v5 which likely won't mean a lot of goals.

Mikheyev is a comparable to Byron's first 3-4 years with Montreal (2016-2019) except he's taller. Byron is a very fast forward, responsible defensively, good on PK, scoring between 30-40pts and having two 20+ goals seasons while playing on a bottom 6. With injuries over the last few years he became a cap dump, BUUUUT even before he signed that contract, before the injuries, he already was overpaid at 3m4.
