will they suddenly look old and slow

Created by: editor9999
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 22, 2022
Published: Aug. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pittsburgh is one of the oldest teams.
Crosby is 35.
Malkin is 36.
Carter is 37 (and he turns 38 around halfway during the season).
Letang is 35 (Letang will be 36 by the time the first round of the playoffs wraps up).
Petry is 34 (and he turns 35 during this season).
Rutta is 32.
Dumoulin is 30 (he turns 31 very shortly).
Rust is 30.
Zucker is 30 (and he turns 31 during this season).
Last season we saw the Islanders look old and slow. I know they had Chara and Greene, but others struggled too. Bailey was 32. Pageau was 29. Palmieri was 30 (turned 31 during the season). Lee was 31 (he managed to salvage his season, but he was still recovering from injury during the first half). The key guys on the Islanders that struggled were younger.
I'm not too worried about Crosby, but some of the other guys I could see falling off and in some cases falling off a cliff. As long as they have Crosby (throw in Guentzel, Rust, and Letang if he doesn't fall off a cliff) playoffs will always be a possibility.

I really agree with this. I think McGinn will be on the third line and Heinen on the fourth but I could see it go either way. I also I could see Rakell play with Crosby instead of Rust but I could also see it go either way.

Out of the mentioned, the only one who will likely slow down is Carter and that's because he already showed signs last season. Everyone else probably won't start hitting that wall for another few years.

If Carter gets a smaller role I don’t think it will be too big a problem

I agree. The beginning of the season probably hurt him having to fill in with the absence of Sid and Geno.

I'd like to Heinen get an extended look with Malkin. Showed great finishing ability last year at 5v5.

I believe he had either the fifth most total ice time or average time on ice (I can’t remember which) due to him playing PK, Pp, and high in the lineup when Sid/Geno were hurt.

If his role is reduced to him solely playing 3C and only one of pp or pk them I am confident he will be a done third line Center who will score like 18 goals and be good on draws
