Give Me Cap Space or Give Me Death

Created by: EmilieCastonguay
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 23, 2022
Published: Aug. 23, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1.) Yes. Another JT Miller trade. COL can't turn down 50% salary retention for the ability to replace Kadri's 87 points AND this allows them to a.) let Newhook develop more in-season without needing to *be the man*, b.) retain their '23 1st in an opportunity to bolster their lineup further at the trade deadline, c.) get replacement RHD depth in 2x Stanley Cup winner, Luke Schenn. VAN gets their "Fugitive" to pair up with Quinn Hughes for the foreseeable future.

2.) OTT has cap space and a need to balance out their roster. Yeah, it sucks to lose JBD, but Garland is an aforementioned 5v5 scoring ace/jack of all trades. 52 points with limited PP time, bouncing all up and down VAN's lineup. VAN includes Dermott as a depth option for OTT in the trade. OTT includes Watson to balance out money and leave them with $$ to spend on potential RFA resignings.

3.) ARI has not much in their pipeline for goaltending; I mean, why sign a placeholder like Karel Vjemelka to a 3-year deal? DiPietro can restart his career in the desert for the low price of a '23 4th round pick.

Based on the current VAN roster construction, they have definitively lost significant NHL forward depth and carry a lot of unknowns. D looks better just by having Girard, though it still has warts in Poolman and overplaying OEL and Myers. Maybe JBD and Rathbone step up and force another move in-season or at least the '23 offseason.

Cap space and flexibility are gained. Team has more draft capital, so think this would be a win for VAN.

What say you?
(waiting for the first comment to be something like, "COL isn't trading Girard for a rental like JT Miller. Stop it!")

You asked for it and you got it....avs once again decline a Girard for JT miller trade. They are not moving Girard, especially for a rental, even at 50% retained for this year.
They wouldnt do that trade 1 for 1....toss in a. 1st and 2nd into that, that doesnt even get a second of consideration from the avs.

Don't know why you think Ottawa has cap. With bonuses they could be near the cap. Besides Garland is nice but not that special.

COL is sitting on cap space they wouldn’t need retention unless the trade was done now. COL isn’t trading their 23 1st and bypassing 2 drafts. COL isn’t trading Girard because if they did they are 1 injury away from playing the top 4 50 minutes a game. So in other words COL will roll Newhook or Rantanen at 2C and keep all their assets.

I really like how you pretended to think about what Ottawa needs and then proceeded to do exactly the opposite of what would be good for the Sens wherever possible

Ottawa accepts if we are losing Batherson due to the Hockey Canada scandal.

No worries as Ottawa wouldn't have any interest in that.

They WANT JBD and not Dermott and Garland is not needed at all.

See there? Ottawa has 6 guys in the top-65 and several other guys that could get there

Watson is not costly and UFA at the end of the season, they will want to keep his veteran presence, he doesn't have a lot of value in a trade anyway
