I think Wheeier could be a cool deadline addition

For me, if the Jets start poorly you could probably get them to retain and take on the two younger players. His two years left fits this window for the Flames and it just seems like a great scoring fit to round out the top 6.

I can see this deal making sense for both teams - Maybe a lottery protected first instead of that 2nd or a 2nd + 3rd. But this concept makes sense to me for both teams! Especially if Weegar has an extension in place with Calgary.

Yeah I had a tough time with the pick valuation, but I don't see CGY including their 1st in any way since BT said it was basically off the table for trades after the Monahan move last week.

I can't see the Jets considering retaining that much on Wheeler and then trading him for pieces that do nothing for the Jets.

Jets desperately need to retool. Getting 2 good young players + a pick will help them a lot.

They probably don't retain much more than 33% though, Wheeler at 4m for 2 years would be considered a very good contract, and therefore if they aren't going to get a massive return then there's no reason to retain that much cap. You see the same thing with Jt Miller mock trades, 5m is already good value and the double retention on Kane to get him for 2.625m, a 3rd team isn't going to retain 2.625m on Kane for something like a 3rd round pick.

We can just see from the Burns trade and the Matt Murray trade (Toronto would have gotten a 3rd team to retain some if the cost wasn't too high). Teams will retain when needed but only enough to facilitate the trade and not the max. Of course we saw with Petry that MTL was absolutely not willing to retain anything and they ended up getting him traded, so teams aren't always even open to retaining.

Swap that to a lottery protected 1st and I’m all for it. Jets aren’t sold on salary retention, but if it allowed for a return of a 1st and two solid young roster players there’s not really much they can do to say no to this. Jets need to start retooling and going with the youth, Bones already said that’s the plan so I’d imagine this fits into their plan.

A couple low end unneeded players and a 2nd aren't enough to give up a really good player with that much retention in conference. If the pick was a 1st and the players better, the Jets might be talking. But as it stands here the Jets are better off keeping Wheeler.

A bottom pairing LD and a bottom 6 winger doesn't give Winnipeg anything they need or don't already have.

The Jets have sooooo many D prospects, the pick is good and Dube is okay but they really have no need for Valimaki.

I think it was on the Bob McCown podcast, he talked about how the jets tried to add some depth in FA and got outbid and that the plan was to play the youth after that happened so that’s leads me to believe they are going with a younger bottom 6. Let’s hope Chevy can work some magic and move a dman or two out so they can get some younger guys on the backend. They have a real issue with waivers there.

This is a bit disingenuous, Valimaki I can see an argument for but I wouldn't say he is far off from Hienola potential wise. However Dube is not some low end unneeded player. They are both young and definitely haven't reached their full potential, and you are writing them off as busts

I didn't say either of them were busts, just not needed. Dube is 24 and about a 30 point player. So, he's alright, but nothing special and definitely not worth seeking if the Jets retaining that much on Wheeler.

So, all in all, okay bottom of the lineup players, just not any better than anything Winnipeg already has in Valimaki's case or not better by enough in Dube's case to consider in a deal of this tyoe.

Dube severely underperformed last year compared to his underlying numbers. Don't be at all surprised if he hits 40+ going forward.

Im also not talking about the trade posted but your choice in words for the players. But as for the value, he'll be 36 in a week so you really shouldn't expect some excellent return

Interesting, probably just means the younger guys we expected anyway like Perfetti, Gus and to a lesser extent Harkins, Barron too I suppose.

Will probably be Perfetti in the top 6 which we expected, Harkins or Barron with Lowry and Appleton which is what was assumed if no mid six forwards were added, whoever else ends up on the 4th line with Toninato.

We'll see, some teams are likely going to have to shed salary so maybe Chevy picks up a player then, won't be surprised if we see a veteran signed yet for the 4th line, someone like Perreault or Chiasson for example.

I wonder how Galchenyuk would do with Lowry and Appleton, the guy can shoot and that line needs a shooter, I'd give it a try for league minimum to $950K.

No, I don't really expect an excellent return, but if the Jets retain this much, they need to get something they can use in return. As Wheeler at around 4 mil is a really nice player.

For the wordingI just meant that they are bottom of the line-up players that aren't anything special, so low end. You took that as meaning busts, which was not intended or inferred.
