Description
Has anyone done this one yet?

Jokes aside, Vancouver is such an interesting team to me. I feel like they *should* be good but what's holding them back? Their top 6 is filled with talent - I don't even have to touch anything here to make it work, and they have plenty of wing options to slide up if guys aren't playing well - Pearson & Podkolzin are solid middle 6 wingers playing below their station here, and if Andrei Kuzmenko plays up to his pedigree, you're gonna have 8 top 6 wingers and only 4 spots for them.

That's why I think it wouldn't be the worst idea to dangle Nils Hoglander for a young RD prospect like Ryan Merkley. It's a real "change of scenery" deal for guys with some pedigree and some track record that might succeed in a new environment. San Jose gets a winger that's better than most everyone in their bottom 6 currently, with the upside to be a solid top 6 player soon; Vancouver trades from a surplus to augment a position that needs depth - I could consider Merkley as RD3 here but would be open to him playing in the AHL to get 20+ minutes a night until he's got a chance to play full time - leaving Coghlan here because the bit doesn't work without him, and he's waivers-eligible and an almost definite claim if you try and pass him through.

I bought out Jason Dickinson. No one noticed.

Goalie is top notch, top 6 is strong as hell, 3rd line is definitely a high variance line but has huuuuge upside, and the 4th line would be a 3rd line on half the teams in the league. Top 4 on D is strong, the 3rd pair is iffy but easily sheltered when you've got workhorses like Hughes and OEL eating up 22-23 minutes every night.

This team should be good this year. Especially playing in a division where Vegas looks worse, Calgary had a ton of turnover, and LA is relying on a ton of young guys to make a leap in front of a bad goalie tandem.

As a Cauncks fan, i do like the idea of dangling Hoglander out there to see if we could get a solid young d man because of how weak or d core is and that Hoglander doesn't really fit into our top 6 rn and with guys like Pod and Lekeriamakki only getting better, it seems he could only get tougher for him, unsure if Merkley is the guy though because we might need a more defensive-minded guy. Like the idea and you fooled me with that team name and a Carolina trade!

Yeah, Merkley might not be the guy (especially considering the in-division tax and all), but I was trying to find an early-20s RD on his ELC who might have underwhelmed a little bit so far. Thought about Sean Durzi on LA, but not sure where Hoglander fits with the dozens of young forwards they seem to have ready to play.

Durzi would be the dream in this case, doubt LA would move him though especially to another Pacific div team

the trade isn't far fetched..
but the sharks have a plethora of 19/20 year old highly skilled smaller forwards and a real lack of near NHL ready RD (it's Merkley and that's it till Laroque is ready, and that could be 1-2 years away at the earliest.
It's not unheard of trading prospect inter division (sharks and Vancouver traded Dahlen for Linus Karlsson in the recent past, and Goldobin for a guy I cant remember before that)

As already mentioned I don’t see this being interesting to San Jose. They trade a position of need for a position they don’t need here. Grier also wants size in the org now so this really doesn’t fit what they are looking for.

Regarding the Aho vs Pettersson debate, although I think Aho is better I think Pettersson probably has more value. Aho has only 2 more years before free agency and could easily get a raise from his 8.4M on the market. Pettersson still has more cost control and doesn't have that much worse numbers than Aho.

I could see merkley being moved. He was a Wilson Jr pick and Grier owes him nothing. i sense Grier want to be big and heavy ane Merkley is not.
