Im still not a fan of Zadina, but I still think the upside is there and at that AAV you really cant go wrong. Unfortunately for Zadina, he'll always have the shadow of Quinn Hughes lurking over him

Good deal, a little surprised he didn't go for 1-2 years to bet on himself. I think he's still got room to grow

In his career? Yeah that seems likely.

Solid deal. Red Wings should b win the playoffs in three years so we’ll see how this contract pans out. Personally, I love it.

Ehh there are worst busts/whiffs in the top 6 on a regular basis. Look at Vancouver themselves two years earlier with Juolevi

Auston Matthews
Patrik Laine
Pierre-Luc Dubois
Jesse Puljujarvi
Olli Juolevi
Matthew Tkachuk
Clayton Keller
Alexander Nylander
Mikhail Sergachev
Tyson Jost

Now that is a whiff

Honestly I think Zadina needs a better agent. He has earned more than 915k for next year. Sure he got 2.75 for 3 years from now, but he had to give up the pay next year to get it.

Gonna give Van a break cause of Benning being a braindead GM

But yeah thats pretty bad. Some would say could have had Tkachuck but I got a feeling he would just end up in Florida anyways which actually would be huge for Van as Huberdeau and Weegar (especially Weegar) would be huge assets for the Canucks rn and Huberdeau would basically guarantee Van trading Miller for big assets.

Great contract considering the length of it. This kid has shown glimpses and I really hope he can break out to have a 20 goal season. Low side is even if he doesnt produce in the box scores, he showed a lot of hustle in the last half of the year. I would like to see him with Vrana again this year, they played really well together in the short frame they had

Juolevi was a bigger whiff, but Hughes was DET's guy, shouldve stuck to their guns. Its easy to point to hindsight, but even back at the draft I wasnt a fan. Obviously it couldve been much worse, but Im still not a fan

He'll get more goals for Detroit than the guy you drafted will get for montreal.

So when is Zadina reaching the talents he’s supposed to? He hasn’t exactly looked great and with that type of contract, either he needs to fire his agent or he won’t be anything special

I didn't know he was "Detroit's guy". Was this a last second switch? From what I remember (though I didn't pay that much attention that year) I thought Svech and Zadina (in that order) were the two European forwards expected to go after consensus Dahlin. Looking back I see both were listed as North American Players by central scouting as it appears they played junior in North America. So maybe I misremember, but I do remember being surprised he fell to 6, when I expected him to go 3 or 4.

Ehh, the one thing Benning did well actually was draft. The biggest mistake Vancouver did was make him GM. He either sucked at his job, or wasn't strong enough to stand up to ownership and make good decisions. If I'm a rich team I hire him to be lead scout, and pay him enough to be content not being a GM

Look at Petterson in 2017, Hughes in 2018 as above. Plenty of hits later too. Boeser and McCann end of first. Demko, Forsling, Hoglander, even Gaudette and maybe DiPietro outside of first round.

He damn well should have been. He played just down the road in Plymouth. Holland missing on that draft pick was inexcusable

He was up there, yes. I think Holland had "shiny object" syndrome after Montreal took Kotkaniemi instead of Z and pushed everyone down the draft.

True but if we look Virtanen and Ollevi top 10 picks that were busts. And these were in stacked draft classes with guys like Nylander, Tkachuck, Ehlers, etc being available

So while later on or heck outside first round he was great man those 2 years kind of came back to bite the org. But at least he has made up for it with other picks before the eventual booting

Terrific signing. I expected this number on a 2 year deal so getting that 3rd year is huge for Yzerman and the wings.
