Oilers No P Kane Read Desc

Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 25, 2022
Published: Aug. 27, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
FA signings:
RFA: Ryan McLeod: McLeod receives a fair value two-year bridge deal, could end up looking like a big steal for him later on in the season and next season.
UFA: Evan Rodrigues: It might look confusing to pay McLeod more than Rodrigues. However, most veteran players are signing for less money and term for what this offer would give him. He'd get a good chance at a cup and or cash in on his next contract as well. Rodrigues overplayed his hand.
Trades:
1. I'm going to start off by saying I have literally no idea how GM's value Tyson Barrie. He's not popular on Capfriendly I know but he's still a right-shot defenseman who produces offense, which I imagine is valued by teams like the Kraken. The Stars could be a fit too but they lack cap space. So I'm not sure if Edmonton is receiving a draft pick or giving one away to offload Barrie.
2. Foegele is a player that definitely lacks value right now. However, Winnipeg has cap space and could use another forward, and could also use some draft picks. Foegele loses his value because so many players do what he does better for a cheaper price, but Winnipeg having trouble attracting those kinds of free agents will definitely find use in Foegele. On top of that, the Oilers will find use with the 2.75M that comes off the books with that.
3. Deadline type deal, might be viewed as an overpay, but Sanheim will command a higher return than Chiarot did last deadline for sure. The Flyers in return get two high draft picks, and a big young defenseman in Niemeläinen. The Oilers also acquire MacEwen who is an extremely hard working forward that the Oilers can keep around.
4. Senators will have a lot of young defensemen looking to crack the lineup. With Dorion looking to extend Brannstrom, it's possible the Senators could look to move Holden at the deadline. Holden is a serviceable bottom pairing defenseman going to a home province contender. The Senators get an okay draft pick as well and doesn't need to retain.

No from Sens, we're looking to strengthen our D-core as it is and Holden is a valued member who currently leads the team in penalty kill minutes.

Sens need to get better on the back end. Holden is one of Ottawa's better Defensemen, there's no value in moving him for a nothing pick.

I'm a Sens fan too and thought that too. I think the trade makes more sense if players like Sanderson, Thomson, JBD and Brannstrom step up that their wouldn't be a huge need for him. Plus if the Senators aren't in a playoff spot come TDL that he might want to go to a contender to have a shot at a cup ring. Trade doesn't have to be Holden specifically either but just any veteran D for sale around the NHL.

Foegele's contract isn't overly bad or anything but since cap space is at such a premium and he has another year I'd hold out for a 2023 2nd to take him.

then the second has to be 2024 as well. Oilers shouldn't go without selecting in the first 2 rounds in 2023.

That’s fine. Flyers have a 2024 first already and no 2023 second so I think a 2023 first and 2024 second makes more sense
