A Realistic Patrick Kane Trade

Created by: nolannichol
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 28, 2022
Published: Aug. 28, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Please ignore the cap space, a third team would need to be involved in order to make this deal work, however, I don't believe CapFriendly has an option to make a three-way trade. Ideally, Chicago would retain 50% ($5,250,000) before shipping Kane off to another team who would then retain 50% of that already retained cap ($2,625,000). Leafs would likely need to give this third team a first or second-round pick and possibly a prospect. Anyways, after all this, Kane's cap hit for the Leafs would be just $2,625,000, only owing Kane 25% of that original $10,500,000 contract.

Trades
TOR
  1. Kane, Patrick ($5,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I've seen lots of people saying Nylander would need to go the other way. If you throw Nylander in the deal + additional assets then what's the point in even making the deal? Trading a 25-year-old star player for a 33-year-old veteran with one year left on his deal.
CHI
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
  2. Robertson, Nicholas
  3. Steeves, Alex
  4. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Kerfoot is a "cap dump" I guess, however, he's a great player and is only owed $750k in real cash this season. He would fetch a nice return for the Hawks at the deadline. It's clear that in a trade for Kane the Hawks want futures. It'd be hard to not want to get your hands on a prospect like Nick Robertson. If it weren't for bad luck with injuries, while also playing for one of the deepest forward groups in the league, he'd already be in the NHL. The first-round pick would fetch Chicago another high-end prospect and Alex Steeves is a good prospect too.

Hawks will get better prospects in a Kane (retained) trade.

Yes, and if there's an extension in place, it'll be even more.

That’s only if there’s an extension on place if not we can find better prospects then Robertson who is so fragile he shatters when a microscopic spec grazes him

Knies and Niemela. I still think Patty Kane ends up a Ranger because I want to see him playing with Breadman again. 😁

I don't think Steeves is the prospect the Hawks are looking for. The Hawks have pretty close ties to the UND program including (2) current prospects and off the top of my head 5+ others like Hino, Gilbert, Cam Morrison, Johns etc... when Steeves left there wasn't any broad discussion about the Hawks (nor Steeves) having any interest.

Yeah it would probably take Knies and Niemela to even get the conversation started.

CF does allow three way trades under the “trade machine” tab in the top right.

Also if you look up arm chair GMs by team, click Toronto and you can see numerous different scenarios in which this exact idea is discussed.

As of now I’ve seen everything from: Kane to Toronto for Muzzin and Kerfoot…. All the way to Kane to Toronto for Knies, Sandin, Robertson, Nylander, Holl, and a first round pick.

My personal favorite was Kane at 25% to Toronto with a ARI 2023 2nd for Kerfoot, Holl, and TOR 2023 1st.

This tells me you didn't see either of his injuries.

That’s okay, other teams will pay. It’s the price you pay to make a push in the playoffs. Leafs literally spent a 1st round pick on Nick Foligno 🤣

Look at Tampa, spent 2 1sts on Hagel. He had some term so different story.

But to win in the playoffs, most teams have to add, you need to pay the price for quality. If you don’t want to pay the price for kane, that’s alright, I’m sure another team will.

I agree, I think Rangers see the East is pretty much wide open. I think Tampa took a significant step back, Toronto didn't get better, and Florida lost A LOT of depth both up front and on D (Specifically LD). Who is going to compete against them? They got a lot of important experience and kept mostly everyone. They'd have two 1st lines if they acquire Kane.
