Columbus gonna be real good real soon

Created by: SimonSelaars3
Team: 2024-25 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 29, 2022
Published: Aug. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I made this as a Wild fan so if I forgot a prospect or player that will be re-signed let me know.

Also, I didn’t speculate contract extensions for anyone so don’t pay attention to salary.

Bottom line, this team is gonna be scary, real soon.

That D corps might end up being one of the best in the NHL 5 years from now and the top end talent in the top 6 is exciting. Not to mention above average goaltending in Elvis and Tarasov.

The future looks bright for CBJ.

Ps, everyone on this team has a cool name.

If all the prospects pan out, they will be scary, but for how long will it last when those very same young guns need new contracts, who knows. Short term the Gaudreau deal will be really good, but in the long run, it’s an anchor, and that anchor will take full effect when those prospects are ready for new deals.

Dimitry Vronkov will be making a case for a bottom-6 center role starting next season.

I actually think his style of play is one that can age a bit better than most. It won't age too well (hard to find a contract with that cap hit that does), but I'm not sure I'd call it an anchor.

When I think "anchor," I think Bobrovsky, Edouard-Vlasic, maybe Seguin.

Anchor might have been a bit harsh, but when it would be time to resign their prospects, it would be as close to an anchor as you can get. I’m sure his deal will age well for the most part, at least the first 5 years or so, but it makes you wonder how many of those high end prospects Columbus will end up losing because they can’t fit them under the cap, assuming they all pan out as expected. The Jackets are currently at the cap, and within the next 4 years, they have, if my math is correct, 14 roster RFA’s (on this AGM at least) that would need to be given raises. That’s not counting any prospects signed to an ELC that expires during that span or any of their UFA’s that need to be resigned in that period either. I guess I’m just wondering at what point that Gaudreau contract becomes an anchor, and my guess would be within the first 4 years. A good comparable would be the contract Hamilton signed with NJ. It will be good for the first couple of years, but it becomes more of a liability cap wise after those first couple of years. The only difference between the 2 would be Hamilton isn’t worth his contract whereas, right now, Gaudreau is worth more than his.

I get it. The only part I disagreed with was "anchor" for his contract. I don't disagree that if guys like Silly/ KJ/ Marchenko pan out, we will have to do some cap-maneuvering around the time they are hitting UFA.

But, then again, if they are all performing well enough that they warrant big pay-raises, I'd say it's a good problem to have - at least for the next 5-6 years.

The thing you have to remember is the cap is going to go up in two years and by up I mean skyrocket up. With the new media deal the NHL is making higher profits again. Fitting player under the cap won’t be as hard as you all think it will be.
