Standing predictions

Created by: KDev
Team: 2022-23 Custom Team
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 29, 2022
Published: Aug. 29, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Some of my takes:
1. Senators make the playoffs after being one of the highest scoring teams in the league.
2. Despite Canuck fans wanting to tank for Bedard, their team plays well enough in front of a monster year from Demko and secure the 3rd spot in the pacific.
3. Capitals fall off a cliff. Wilson, Backstrom and Oshie all miss significant time to start the season putting them on the back foot and they just can’t recover.
4. Same thing that happens to the caps happens to the bruins except they are able to tread water and still be in the playoff conversation.
5. Columbus exceeds all expectations. Gaudreau comes out with a Hart level year and Merzlikins is a top 5 goalie this year and propels them to a 3rd seed in the metro.
6. Detroit starts the season strong but falls off after the thanksgiving break. Give them 1 more year of development and I think we can seriously start seeing them closer to the playoffs once again.

Imo the Pacific is wide open, I could see almost every team competing for a playoff spot, except for San Jose

Also I feel like there is no way Detroit finish that low, I don't see them in the playoffs just yet like you said but I feel there going to be a team in the hunt till the very end of the season

No way Columbus finishes that high. Moving Bjorkstrand to sign Gaudreau means they didn't add nearly as much offensive value as people think. Their center depth is nonexistent. This is not their year.

Yeah - your top two for the Metro is correct. The rest is all wrong. CBJ and NJ don't finish that high. Caps and Pens battle it out for 3rd / 4th place.

That and Gaudreau usually only has "Hart level" seasons in a contract year.

I feel like both you and the OP are underestimating Vegas.

Vegas ain’t very good. Not having your starting goalie the whole season is bad. Thomson was good last year but not enough to make the playoffs. They also lost Patches IMO.

They aren't the only team with goaltending challenges, and I don't see you guys fading the Leafs and Avalanche. Thompson is better than anything those teams have.

And Vegas is still a very good team when healthy, offensively and defensively. They just barely missed the playoffs last season.

Leafs had bad goaltending last season and just... simply outscored it. Avs just seems to get good goaltending from anybody they put in net.

I think it's more likely than not that Vegas will make the playoffs, but they're definitely at risk for things to go bad.

Central going to be a dog fight, I would say colorado first and chicago/Arizona last and second last, the rest no certainty’s. Pacific Edmonton 1st and sj last, la cgy van going to be a jumbled mess with Anaheim trailing them. 4 prominent east teams could be falling off a cliff with the wrong injury or age showing year, would be my bold prediction Fla, tb, pit, wash. Probably not all 4, but a little bold. Buffalo or ottawa sneaks into a playoff spot and Toronto finishes first. Carolina isles rangers, and one in one out for colombus and devils. Little shake up come playoff time.

That was having Brossoit who was bad and Lehner for half the season. I don’t expect them to miss the playoffs by a lot. Georgiev is better than Thompson. Georgiev would’ve gotten his opportunity but he didn’t because Igor came around. Murray is bad but Sammy isn’t as bad as people think. Patches was a 20-25 G scorer and a 60-60-70 P player. Their offense and D are good but like I said before the G is a struggle. Demko, Quick, Markstrom, Campbell, Oettinger, Saros, and Fleury are all better than Logan. Binnington if he can be as good as he was in the playoffs is bette than Logan. Hellebyck is bette than Logan. I don’t think they will be terrible but I don’t have them missing the playoffs by a good 10 PTS with Eichel fully healthy.

Considering 90% of us said that with the kings last year not impossible for Columbus to do what the kings did last year

Writing of the Isles so soon? Also Winnipeg seems a bit high. They haven't added significantly this season, if anything they aged. Nashville and Dallas are real wild cards, but I find it tough to see both finishing below Winnipeg. Then again, a lot of that is if Hellybuck is playing like a top 10 goalie or a Vezina winner. Other than that, solid rankings

Metro is much stronger than the Pacific, and the Kings wouldn't have made the playoffs if Vegas wasn't so injured. With the Devils expected to take a large step forward and the Islanders likely to positively regress, I'm not holding my breath for a team with the center corps and goaltending of Columbus.

I think Winnipeg is second or 5/6, not a whole lot of in between. There’s 2 years left on helly/Dubois/scheifele/wheeler, Winnipegs version of a contract year. So a large buyin and bowness sells the new systems, or one raging dumpster fire that turns into one large fire sale. Could see a bounce back year on island and Winnipeg. But we will see
