Youth swap D tweaks

Created by: Blazingbat11

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 30, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
NSH trade: Both players involved are 3rd pick picks. Prokop being the younger of the two at 20, Harris still very young at 22, but is more NHL ready. Habs have an overabundance of LD and are lacking RD, Preds have a solid but extremely aging LD core (Josi 32, Ekholm 32, Mcdonagh 33, Borowiecki 33) with nothing in their system for youth that stands out at LD. So it fills a need on both sides.

Sign PK Subban as a low risk high reward signing.

This gives MTL a balanced D core that allows for healthy competition for the youth to be inserted in the lineup, without having them play above their heads. On LD Habs will still have Guhle competing with Xhekaj and even Norlinder, on RD Barron won't be alone anymore and can compete with Prokop. For the youth that don't make the lineup, send them to Laval, have Widemen there as 7th d or for injuries.

NSH isn’t trading a RHD prospect for an older one at LHD. And with Harris being closer to NHL ready as you say, NSH doesn’t have the space for him with 4 LHD already signed to long term contracts at the NHL level. Doesn’t make sense for NSH. They pass.

Thats a fair point, i also dont like the logic of moving harris simply to get back a RHD, Harris lined up on the right side a few times last year and is a fantastic skater so i dont think playing on his offside is a big issue. I dont know Prokup enough to know if the value is there but to your point of Nashville not having the space for an NHL ready prospect on the leftside, I think the opposite is true for MTL they need an a few of these young dman to get into the lineup next year.

Still dont understand why harris is in so many mock trades. He looked good in his first few NHL games and he is a young guy with potential.

I think it's more with so many LD, and without touching Guhle, Harris is just a logical choice of someone that has value that they could trade for something.

That's fair. I'd argue that in a perfect situation, Harris should be given time to marinate in the AHL to gain more pro experience (with MTL he went straight from the NCAA to the Habs lineup). With that being said, if one or more of NSH LD go down (or decline), do they have a young NHL ready dman to call up? I'm not claiming to be a NSH prospect expert, but I didn't see one. Which is why I thought there might be a fit.

The Preds seem to like Marc Del Gaizo a lot, so he could be the first call up, if there's a need. Keven Gravel has over 100 games of NHL experience, so he's a decent option for spot duty with the big club too. With five left shot defensemen on the NHL roster though, there probably won't be much opportunity for call ups at LD in NSH.

Grant Mccagg mentioned he could see Harris playing RD in training camp. I know he ain’t popular among hockey fans but he’ s good at “reading the tea leaves” imo

I don’t know but that may leave too many rookies breaking in at one time though

That’s one of my concerns too. I think everyone (including Habs management) want to see Guhle take that 3rd LD slot behind Matheson and Edmondson, and there isn’t really anyone on RD to challenge Barron, except if Harris plays on his offside. Not to mention on LD again there’s Xhekaj and Norlinder who have a shot as well come training camp.

Idk Habs have too many LD that will need “sheltered” playing time to gain experience, and not enough spots where they won’t be thrown to the wolves.
