Pulling a Brooks Orpik

Created by: exo2769
Team: 2022-23 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2022
Published: Aug. 31, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
CHI
  1. Benn, Jamie
  2. Stankoven, Logan
  3. 2023 1st round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
What would it take for the Hawks to knowingly trade for him with the understanding that he'd be bought out. He could then go back and sign with the Stars for something reasonable.

It's already happened with Brooks Orpik. The precedent has been set.

Stankoven and the 2023 1st?
DAL
From the Hawks side...3 years of ~9M cap hit is ROUGH, but the money isn't half bad and the cap implications for this year and next aren't too bad either...aka...the Hawks aren't trying to win. It's really that 3rd year that makes this tough.

So glad you are proposing buying him out too. I wouldn't want to see him on the hawks.

It's the only way he'd waive too though. I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

he'd have to take a year off and i don't think he'd even want to resign with dallas given how much that owner has dogged him

The NHL made this move illegal after the Orpik trade if I remember correctly.

For how much Dallas gives up here, I think they may just be inclined to stick it out with Benn and see what happens with Robertson and Oettinger.

Is it the timing of the buyout that you're saying he'd have to take a year off? Orpik was traded away from WAS on June 2018 and signed back with WAS in July 2018.

Dallas would be better off waiting till Benn’s contract expires, and keeping a future stud in Stankoven and their first round pick (who could very well be a good asset to the team moving forward).

But the biggest problem in all of this is Benn’s NMC, I can almost 99.99% guarantee you that he’s not waiving it for a team contending for the 1st OV pick.

Edit: forget that last statement, I read the description and all that, but it just hit me now. I still stand by my thoughts of Dallas declining that trade though.

its been a bit since i've read the CBA but from what I remember the deal is when a player is traded and subsequently bought out they cannot rejoin the team they were traded from for a year from the trade, which prevents like if Toronto wanted to trade Tavares to AZ for a buyout and he comes back on vet min to toronto or something

Correct, the league doesn't allow the Orpik move anymore.

Stankoven and a 1st is about the minimum amount I would be ok with to take on his cap hit, buyout or not. I like it, but I doubt Dallas would be interested. Benn could go and sign with another team, though. Just not Dallas.

From what I'm hearing from others...he may not want to go back anyway. I'm not going to claim I know the in's out's of his relationship in Dallas. He'd be a UFA and can sign somewhere else.

Sorry but it's illegal and cap circumvention, Under the new CBA, You can't trade a player to another team with buyout implications and then sign that player for much cheaper offer. The new CBA forbids that very thing. So it's not happening.

I'm not saying the rule doesn't exist, but I just reviewed the new CBA and I'm pretty darn sure isn't not in the new 2020 CBA. Must have been an amendment back in 2018 right after the Orpik trade.

I proposed Benn to CHI recently too. I think it could be a good fit as long as Benn waives his NMC. Lots of ways for CHI to handle him

Yeah, the 2020 amendment doesn't discuss everything...just the new stuff. I'm not saying you're wrong.

"The Precedent" that was set: The NHL was not happy with Colorado and Washington, and will look to make an example of the next team that tries this

“A buyout can only be performed on a player who was on the clubs reserve list at 3:00pm on the most recent trade deadline”

    Buyout FAQ

Thus this is against the CBA.

You gotta look at it as a strictly cash number being paid to buy picks. How much does a middle of the pack 1st rounder cost in millions before being drafted? Idk but the franchise of the Blackhawks going into a rebuild expecting to have down sales and attendance are probably not going to shop for a 1st round pick in this method. Albeit I think this one of the most creative ideas at the table and I think a first year GM like Kyle should be aware of but not participating in.
