Hart signed about the same contract when he was trending down, after a bad year

Oettinger signed that following a wonderful season + playoffs

Oettinger could have had more money even with a smaller sample

Glad the Stars weren't suckered into giving him massive money after a single good season. Gives him time to establish himself as the starter and will allow him to earn a greater payday once guys like Benn and Suter come off the books.

It's a goodish deal. But mostly just because we have been hearing for so long how much oettinger deserves. It's actually a lot compared to most goalies not named Demko with that little of NHL game experience who have played on total at about average NHL quality.

I like his upside, but I'd argue this deal feels good because his team paid it beuatifully and got us all to expect a massive deal. Typically an rfa like this would be signing about 2.8-3
