6.3 left for Roberston, be interesting if he wants a bridge for that amount or if he still would want north of that long term.

Stars have more than that available once Khudobin hits LTIR officially

WHO VOTED NO?!

This is a low amount to pay for your starting goaltender and he remains an RFA at the end of it. How can you look at this as a bad deal for Dallas?!

Really no point in giving him a long term deal, even if he's the real deal we think he is. The days of massive Goalie contracts are over after Bob and Price. Even if Jake establishes himself as a perrrenial top 5 Goalie over the next 3 seasons, I don't see him earning more than $6M AAV (or the Cap % equivalent) on his next deal. Goalies are just too unpredictable, Igor and Vas notwithstanding.

One guy voted NO on Derek Jeter making the HOF. Both are indefensible.

I think this is one of the best signings of this summer. He’s shown enough over two seasons and playoffs to convince me that he’s probably going to be a #1 goalie for a long time. Dallas may wish they had signed him for longer, but teams that sign goalies long term, no matter how good they are, often live to regret it. Three years should be safe, and the team will be in a good position to negotiate another good contract with him when he comes out of it, as he’ll still be a RFA without arbitration rights.

That’s the way bridge contracts are supposed to work, but I don’t really think of this one as a bridge. Bridge contracts usually mean “let’s wait and see how he develops before we commit long term”, but I think they already know what they have in Oettinger. This is more about avoiding the curse of the long-term goalie contract.

I agree with you, except that I think it’s too soon to call Shesterkin a “notwithstanding”. He’s definitely past the “great rookie season that he could never reproduce” curse that afflicts a lot of goaltenders, and I like the way he stepped up his game after showing some vulnerability early in the playoffs, but he’s still only played two full seasons.

The question is can Oettinger prove that his playoff run wasn’t a fluke
