Rangers have about a million dollars in cap space and one forward slot open, so any trade would have to be essentially cap neutral for them. Even with the retention, this proposal puts them over the limit. As @Josh says, retain at least twice as much and NY might bite.

Instead of retention, do the Rangers have a cap dump contract between $1.7M - $2.5M ? Or could MTL help retain an additional 50% of the Patrick Kane contract so the NYR can acquire him ?

No - they don’t have a cap dump. People mention Reaves, but that’s not realistic.

If they can get Kane under 3m, it might, might work. But that’s a lot for a guys they can’t resign, and doesn’t check the needs boxes.
