The only reason for not signing Tavares is if they knew a pandemic was coming, the worst years are gone though, so no point in trading Tavares now, would just weaken the team. Plus, chances are that Chychrun would be on your ACGM in 2 years as the move Dubas shouldn't have made. He's injury prone and weaknesses in his game are going to be pointed out more by Toronto media vs instead of his strengths if he struggles, and then you'll view him in a different light.

Hard to determine his strengths and weekness on a terrible Arizona team. He is 24 yrs old and still developing.
Say the cap this season had risen without pandemic, if there was an extra 3-5 million where would you spend the money to make this current roster a cup?

Not a good trade for anyone. Can't see Arizona having any interest in a Chychurn package based around a soon-to-be 32 year old John Tavares, a 33 year old Jake Muzzin, and what will most likely be a trio of late 1st rounders, even if you could convince two local boys to waive their NTCs so they can leave their Cup contending team and go play in a college rink in the desert.

Beyond that, this totally wrecks one of this team's major strengths - the top 6. You really think running Evan Rodrigues-Willie Nylander-Sonny Milano is better than Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander?

Maybe Arizona *does* make the trade after all, because even though they don't need two veterans on the wrong side of 30, this is going to turn the Leafs into an also-ran pretty quick. The upgrade from Muzzin to Chychurn isn't drastic enough to paper over the fact that you've broken your middle 6 with one move, and have no picks to use to acquire the assets that your newfound cap space could bring on.

I would spend the 3-5m to improve the top 6 forwards or a RHD, I know Chychrun can play the right side, but unless they are trading Brodie+ for him, getting him doesn't make sense because of his health. I don't think Dubas would change the division of the cap in terms of paying players with bigger roles more money. Without the pandemic, some predicted that the cap would be at least 10m more than it is now. The idea that they have to spend more on depth might not necessarily be true.

The fact that it's hard to gauge what Chychrun actually is why I said if he's acquired by Toronto his game is going to be under a microscope and if he struggles the media will tear him and Dubas apart or if he continues to get injured then Dubas will get criticized for giving up a ton for an injury prone defensemen who at 24 already has a lengthy injury history. Then fans who are suggesting acquiring him now, will be criticizing Dubas in 2 years (whether he's around or not) for that move now that he needs a pay raise in a year, and they will be making ACGMs trading him away.

In this trade scenario, Muzzin gets bought out becoming UFA and Tavares gets moved to Columbus. Arizona acquires 3 first round picks for Chychurn. They also move Tavares to Columbus for another 1st. That is a pretty good haul that can be used for picks or traded away.

Kerfoot and Nylander are still playing for Leafs. If you think Nylander sucks at centre have a read on this article from 2021...very well written article. https://theleafsnation.com/2021/05/22/william-nylander-should-be-the-2c/

How do you think a young 24yr old Chychrun with term and good cap isn't much of an upgrade? What are your thoughts on Murray injury history?

Chychrun has 3yrs of term remaining on his contract. The fact that he is only 24 and none of his injuries deal with concussions or career ending injuries it could just be bad luck and a ****ty team.

The most games he ever played was 68 in his rookie, year, and the only full season he played was the shortened one that was 56 games. He consistently plays around 50-60 games, that's some pretty bad luck.

As a gm, I wouldn't test my luck as a gm giving up a boat load for him as if he was a cheap, young, top 2 D. I would offer what is appropriate for a cheap, young, top 4D at the most, less if you can argue that he's injury prone too. Seems like the interested execs agree that the ask for Chychrun is ridiculous, while those who think is fair aren't those who are interested.

Seems now that ARZ needs, is willing to take Zaitzev (a cap dump) to get that return but still no trade so seems like Dorion still thinks their ask is too pricey. Chychrun had 4 or 5 years when he was first getting shopped, now he has 3, perhaps he will only have 2 or 2.5 when he gets traded.

One-for-one, I'd agree Chychurn is an upgrade over Muzzin. But when you also have to throw in -3- first rounders and you're moving out John Tavares as well, it's arguably making your team much worse.

As far as injury history (assuming you meant Muzzin since none of us were talking about Matt Murray), Chych's injury history isn't all that spectacular either. 6 seasons in the league, never played more than 68 games, and only played 90% of the games twice (63/70 in 2019-20, 56/56 in 2020-21). He does have youth on his side, sure, but if you're moving Muzzin because of his injury history you gotta take note of the fact that Muzzin has actually missed fewer games than Chychurn has since Chych's rookie season in 2016-17 - 75 missed games for Muzzin, 117 for Chych, including both of them missing the same 35 games this past season. Just seems that if you're moving one guy because you don't like his injury history, it would make sense to target a little sturdier.

Tavares was the 15th highest scoring center in the league last year playing a career low in minutes. How the hell was he a detriment to the team?

The detriment is the cap hit, Dubas awarded so much cap to Matthews, Marner, Nylander and now Reilly. If his cap hit was distributed to other positions it would make the Leafs a better team.
